Just converted all my bmps to pngs to save space, now all the black areas of the sprites are no longer transparent.

Anyone any ideas!?

Hmm, sounds like something happened in the conversion and your black is no longer (0,0,0). That said if you are using a .png instead of using black for you transparancy make the area transparent when you save it, you will get much better AA this way and be able to use true black again in your images.
