Any development platform may be used, including DB/DBPro and of course the arch-nemesis Blitz.

Let's put in a good showing for DarkBASIC.

Well i'll be entering, Banshee has three entries planned depending upon the rules when they are announced, although admitedly one is mostly written already and as it's on their list of games as a Work In Progress is either not likely to score well or will be invalidated as an entry - this is of course our forthcoming Asteroids game.

The other two, well we're experimenting really and doing a role-reversal for one in that Nick will program it and i'll be doing all the graphics.

The third will be our flagship entry, and feature a mid-stage terrascape terrain system and some 3D models we've had developed for some time but as of yet have not released. We'll be doing some new media too, but first I have to try and get hold of the original game...!

Nah... I like the idea of a multiplayer game or a "made in teams" game.

Idea! Brilliant idea! Why don't we remake DarkBASIC classic v1.3?

Maybe I will enter... but it's obviously UK, so I have a feeling there will be either age or location restrictions in the way.

And this was on the main page:

'£1000's of pounds worth of prizes.'

*groan*... really, what do they teach in schools these days? £ is the pounds sign and if you use it, you don't need to use the word 'pounds'. That's like saying '$100 dollars!' 100 dollar dollars? How many?

*end rant*

Well, if I can I might enter anyways, if I think of something to remake and don't take four years on it

You won't win it either, we're not offering it as a prize

Exactly. Most of the popular games are on the list which means remaking a different game will be hard, especially if you haven't played any games other then the ones listed which is a high possibility.

So that basically rules your asteroid game out PD. lol

There's always Blasteroids, anyone remember that little Gem from the arcades? - basically Asteroids with 2 players, better graphics, and different scenes/enemies/powerups etc.

I know a lot ancient spectrum games that could be revamped if anyone is stuck for ideas - just let me know the genre and I'll post some suggestions.

Well I know which game I'll probably do, just hope I can make the animations for it because that will be the hardest part.

The full and precise details will be available at http://www.remakes.org on June 1st. Of course we cannot stop people starting before then but be careful not to fall foul on the one rule which is ..... oh bugger now what was it

As for everyone getting a free software package, yes this is true but it MUST be a fully completed remake of an old game - anyone trying to be clever will be shat on from a great height. It can't be one already on our list (unless it is SIGNIFICANTLY better by miles). The reason we insist on this is because we dont want to see Jet Set Willy 14332 or the billionth Space Invader clone.

Any questions can be lodged on the forum on our website

Hey hey Mouse, no need to flame the guy just because he's English or this'll become another Al-Qeeda thread.

Retro Remakes is founded on English soil, but lists games from all over the world - they don't have the same prejudices as Realnetworks do, so it shouldn't be a problem for you to enter.

You can't blame a guy for thinking in his own language now can you?

Drill, I wasn't flaming anyone . I don't have any problem with anyone because of their race or nationality.

It's not proper in English English or American English to use an apostrophe like that, however.

Well if pedanticism is the name of your game then "English English" isn't proper International English, American English, Olde English, or Common English.

Thankyou.

It seems the Blitz community is really getting behind this one on their forums - despite the efforts of our own Blitz-boasting-DB-bashing resident AntonyW spreading the phalacy that you have to pay to enter (you don't btw - just another of Antony's attempt to have a 'debate' - will this guy ever get along nicely with other people? I suspect not).

I'd really like to see a strong turn-out for DarkBASIC. Hopefully all those games that didn't make it in time for the DB competition will finaly make an appearance?

Having had our own retro competition so recently I hope we're not all too burnt out, instead lets consider it a head start.

Well I'm pretty sure I'll enter, although the competition details aren't up yet so I'm just going to start on some graphics before getting into the coding. I might actually finish this one in time lol.

ok i think we should show blitz what we can do... i have an idea which isnt on the list, sadly doesnt include motorbikes jumping over buses, but the 3d models would be quite difficult, much above my abilities. If someone would be willing to make me a model or too, then tell me otherwise ill be learning how to use milkshape

Hehe Dan, now we'll see what you can actually do

The motorbike jumping buses thing was a bit of an in-joke and won't affect the scoring, they haven't announced all the rules yet but it looks like anything up to the start of the 16bit era is allowed, so that's Megadrive, Amiga 500 etc.

Saturn, PS1, Amiga 1200 - these will be no go.

That still leaves us around 3 million games to remake, so despite the grumbles there's plenty not on the list If your looking for inspiration you couldn't do worse then check out World of Spectrum, Back2roots and The Underdogs - all linked from the Banshee site aswell as sites such as Mame, and emulator sites for the NES etc. Personally i'm still trying to find a Binatone and an Atari 2600 emulator - now that's retro

I wonder if they'll accept remakes of old magazine listing games! Remember those? I still have a book of those somewhere for the ZX81

Well technically, Lester the Panty theif is a remake of a spectrum game, Would be funny if they'll allow that, but I doubt it

All the issues of YourSpectrum and Crash magazines are online, there's some funny titles in there from a time when games were soooo diverse

Actually PD the word is "pedantry" not "pedanticism".

And Mouse, I know the English education system isn't the best in the world, but it is still at least ten times as good as the American system.

Yes, the word is 'pedantry'.

And if you resent me for actually having standards, that's not my business. Hawk and gawk and point all you want, but I'm not going to be lowered to that level.

Witchbomber... well, I won't even comment. IMO the western school system in general should be shut down it's so messed up.

Hmm, so does that include the SNES or not? The game I was going to do was released in 1989 but remade for the SNES in 1991.

"But we couldn't do that Mr Flibble," questioned Rimmer. "Who'd clean up the mess?"

ok this is really pedantic, but pedantry is plural and a noun, where-as pendantic is an adjective and the word pedatasicm as used by me is not even in the dictionary.

Therefor we're both wrong.

Quote: "if pedanticism is the name of your game "

Why was I wrong? If it is "the name of your game" then a noun is the correct word type. Pedantry is the noun equivalent of pedantic as in:
I am really pedantic, therefore I engage in the activity of pedantry.

God, not only am I pedantic, that's a really bad example.
Besides, it was only a joke.

Sorry to be pedantic, but pedantry is plural yet if I had used this word I would have been referring to a singular instance. LOL - this could go on for ever, if we're going to be pedantic about it!

Anyway, Kevin has finished the main model for Banshee's flagship entry. Although I don't want to release too many details about the game yet here is one of Kevin's concept pictures using the model.

hmm i smell desert strike if it is, make it good. I remember that game bein pretty cool... well i actually only even had jungle strike, but they were similar (i think). I have an idea, as i said before. Its not on the list only its a bit ambitious. Will it be marked down if it is analogue joypad compatible only? otherwise the movement really wouldnt work for my idea.

Nah, that list doesn't even cover a fraction of the games over 10 years old (a rough guide as to what retro remakes considers retro) - they've got a few hundred games listed out of about three billion...

yeah but thats because there are so many pre-NES games which the majority are just shitty little things that some random people made in around 10 minutes and released.

anyway i decided my game will use the thrustmaster firestorm dual power gamepad. Its cheap effective and has analogue sticks
thats all i need. now i can finish designing levels, or should i revise.... i went into my german oral with no preparation and ended up speaking english today... not good.

The best spectrum emulator I found was Warajevo, I think I got it from

[href]http://www.worldofspectrum.org/emulators.html

and you can get files/games from

[/href]http://tzxvault.retrogames.com/

Hope this helps you,but I found I was spending so much time reliving the past that I never got to remake anything as there is so much classic stuff out there. :-s
