As you might guess from the title, the first new 3d competition is to build a Monkey Ball Level.

Rules:
-this is a Low Poly Comp
-your level poly limit is 2000 polys (triangles)
-your allowed 4 textures at 256x256 resolution

(edit april/16/2007
entry thread is up
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=104397&b=3

NOT Required rule:
- please set the scale of your levels to where the monkey ball is 1 DBP unit in diameter (this is not mandatory, and if you can't or don't have time to do this, it will not disqualify you)

This is a 2 week comp, and all entry's are due on April 24, 2007, 11:59pm EST.

This is the WIP thread, so post your WIP's here, lol.

Good luck!

If you have any questions dealing with this comp, please post them here.

I love your ideas with the Animation Competition Moondog, good stuff. I was thinking of making the 'steampowered' compo an animation one, but thought it might alienate too many users.

Just a quick question....

Whats monkey ball?!?! And I guess a follow-on is...what is a Monkey ball level?

lol, I'm a touch confused.

Looking great though!

monkey ball is a game where you play as a monkey inside a bubble thing. you have to roll it around and get to the finish line. levels generally consist of slopes, thin paths, rickety bridges and other things that might make it harder for what is essentially a ball to get to the end. the idea for a monkey in a ball is similar to a hampster ball.

Nice one, okay I'm not supposed to be modelling, but I thought it might be something quick I can do in Torque constructor with little stress, as I have 2 weeks, I can leave this week for coursework and next week for goofing off on this

Sounds like an fun compo - perhaps it would be an idea to standardize the scale though, make it easier if someone wanted to make a little game from them.

heres a vid showing off the first few levels of super monkey ball for the Wii:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EkTDYVxvxU

this'll give you a general idea how the levels are made up, though I'm hoping peps will get real creative with this. I suggest people do some searches on youtube for vids, because you'd be surprised at how some levels are just so crazy, lol.

Van:
thats an idea, but scale as in units? or level size?

Ehehe... Monkey ball is a fun game, some of its levels are hard as nails, though. It will be interesting to see what devious contraptions you guys come up with... mind you, 2000 poly limit is very low in my opinion, if you want to have any amount of track decoration: a dozen trees and you've hit the limit.

Not supposed to be modelling, but hey, I found time between working and chilling, but I really wanted to try out Torque Constructor and kick off with this first challenge, so I got started on a WIP and loaded it into Torque. I've gone for a more techno level, the textures aren't mine but place holders. (besides they're too big and not cartoony enough)

looking great! if you plan on adding alpha channels, those will be considered part of your textures, just so you know.

one thing i want to add, the poly limit is for the level only! and the voting will be based on the level only. Level is defined by the area the monkey ball would be rolling on. If you want to add some background stuff to make it look more fancy, go right ahead, but this should not be part of peoples choices when voting.

Also, the poly limit is to challenge people to find new ways of modeling. This is actually a good limit if you were making a MB level for a hand held system Also, with the textures, you can look at it this way, you have 4 256x256 textures, or you have 4 files with 4 textures each, thats 16 128x128 textures. Not only am i challenging you with keeping you polys low and to the point(pun not intended lol), but i'm also challenging how well you put together and uv map your level. i want people to go as complex or simple as they want

hope this clears up some questions about the rules

Sweet sweet, I might throw in some powerups and get the Torque Orc to run across the course for a bit of fun.

By scale I mean the size of the ball in relation to the level, if you said the ball is X diameter, then people could add a dummy for it so the levels are all relevant for the same size ball.

Maybe the diameter could be 1 DBPro unit - which is pretty handy for Dark Physics, not sure what sort of scale Newton uses, but I think that puts the ball at about 1 foot diameter for DP - a good football/bowling ball size.

ah ok, that would be neat. I'll add it to the first post, but i won't make it a requirement in case some people aren't sure on how to go about it.

I finished my next section, a half pip like thing. Sorry if it's kind of hard to see:

The poly count is for the whole thing combined.

@Shadow Heart - That's a killer track you got there!

Edit: Wait poly count in triangles?!? Dang that means i actually have used 1174 polygons.

just do your best with textures, and try to get an entry in if you can fx.

yes the poly limit is 2000, a poly is defined by a a single 3 sided triangle.

i say, take a look at your half pip, and see what polys you can get rid of, like ones you'll never see, or ones that add more detail then you really need. Or simplify objects, and then use textures to give it detail.

also, you have to remember, monkey ball tends to go fast through levels...it's not a 'sit around and look at the pretty detail game', it's a time limit 'get your arse in gear' game. So, just keep that in mind when modeling your levels.

also, by my time we are only 3 days into the comp, so you got plenty of time to work on these levels take your time, and don't rush it, this isn't a SMC, haha! ...hmmm...my silly joke that only i might get right now...blah

Anyway Here is my WIP level, It would probably suit as an expert level

I am going to add a bit more on; and then add details till I hit 2000 tris I am going to texture this like the original monkeyball levels

dang, that would be hard, lol. wheres the start point, at the top or at the bottom? Going either way would be a challenge.

one thing i was hoping people would do is go for a original monkey ball look, because of the poly and texture limit

At the top
We will have to have double sided polys; as when you fallout the level; you will see the gaps.

If you want them to go for original monkeyball, heres one from youtube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yt6ibgPd1OU&mode=related&search=

Man, mine needs way more work.

hey when you said every poly count is by every 3 sided traingle does that describe a 3d traingle to have 3 polys or did you mean 6 because theres 6 corners on it.

a polygon has 3 edge's, 3 vertix's and 1 face. it's a triangle not sure how to explain it any further. To clarify, if you:

in DBP, the polycount is 12 polys.

Hope that clears that up more. Didn't realize it was that confusing, sorry for any confusion caused on my part.

it's ok, I'm using a special software because I found out it could export to .X and i'm having trouble finding the polycount, but I can manually read the objects to get the polycount thanks!

I sudenly want to play SMB so im ganna play SMB adventure

@Crazy ninja: can we see a render of the whole level? And BTW are you using gamespace or truespace, cos it sure looks like it

wow looks good; some of the shots looked like renders from gamespace to me(just the greys and the shadows) You may want to lower some walls, as it makes the levels harder. But I guess this could be a begginer level.

For those who haven't played super monkey ball there are 3 stages of levels:

--Begginer
--Intermediate
--Expert

@Moondog

Is monkey ball like a marble runner game? So all I have to do is design a track for a ball to move along? Can the monkey jump in the game? so that I can make pit falls if I want to?

you go ti higgins, you are a monkey in a ball, you roll and jump around a level, avoiding obstacles, trying to collect bananas and get to the ending goal. I posted some videos on the first page if you want to take a look at how the game is played.

no it cannot jump; but you control the monkey. Think of it like a hamster in a ball rolling down a street. He still has a bit of control of direction.

He can? I mean it can jump if you go off a ramp or something; but being able to jump normally must ruin the clasic monkeyball gameplay.
