Hi all. I've been working on a Sten gun for Cherds game. For those who don't know, the Sten was a British sub machine gun developed during the war. It was infamous for its simple design. What you see in the video is the result of about a weeks work. This is probably the best animation I have ever done. I have finally got the hang of animating my weapons, and exporting with the right settings I have also animated the shell casings ejecting, becasue I'm on a computer using V1 with no updates and I don't want any naff 'floating' shells. All I need to do now is add some arms (when I have modelled a good pair) I might release this, a long with some other weapons after Cherd hs finished his game. Video in this post, screenshot in next...

(thanks to Errant for giving me advice on recording with Fraps)

turn down your speakers, it's quite loud...

Please leave comments.

thats good, but the weapon is quite simple. But you said it was simple so then its OK.

I learnt a lot, so i changed my name.

I think it looks spot on, the sten gun was quite a simple weapon, it had to be as it made it cheaper and easier to mass produce during WW2 when it was in service XD

Thanks so much Opposing Force i really cant thank you enough

EDIT
and OMG i just watched the video, the animations are superb !!!!!!!!!

Very impressive. If I were you I would make a walk animation, of moving back and forth. Makes it look more natural. Also, to make it look even more natural, make the clip knock the side of the slot, like the guy missed the slot, like on COD etc.

Sorry to go off topic, but BF2's animations are too natural to be true! On the sniper, theres a little ring on the side, and when you dont move your character for 30 seconds, the guy puts his finger in the ring, and gets it stuck! Then he tries to twist it out etc. If youve not already seen it, go watch! Very impressive

Thanks for the comments. Cherd, you're welcome I plan to make this look and function as close to real as I can. When I come to modelling a new pair of hands that I will be using with this weapon, I will build a skeletal rig inside them so the fingers and thumb will move as part of the animation. One note about the Sten is it's open bolt, which means the loading of a round into the chamber is the same action for when it's fired, so when you change magazines the bolt stays back so there is no cocking of bolt after reloading, if that's not too confusing. I will post my progress in this thread. Cherd, I will send you the finished model as soon as possible

EDIT: Will do Smitho, to be honest I wanted to get straight down into doing the fire and reload animations. I won't forget too add a walk animation. I know what you mean about the inserting magazine 'knock', I have been playing Day of Defeat a lot lately and I like that feature on the Sten Battlefield 2, Lol the idle animations are great fun. Like the M4, he flashes his left arm infront of him and makes a "come and get some" gesture.

That gun looks amazing! How did you get such a good metal texture? Was it layers or your own way?

NICE

Just a little lesson, The sten gun was really a simple design. Almost the entire weapon are made of pipes. The very good thing in the field was it's magazine. As it was the exact same magazine from the Schmeisser series. The schmeisser weapons are most famous of it's MP40. So, if you needed a magazine, take one from a enemy with a MP38, 40 or 41. Simple.

But, if you throwed a loaded sten hard in the ground,it would shoot all the bullets non-stop. Thats a drawback!

The Sten Gun was mass produced all over the world. Even here in Norway. The most famous "factory" of stens in Norway is the underground of Oslo. Here, they produced weapons for the Norwegian Resistance. When the Germans came to look what the heck was going on about each month, they took some blueprints of sewer pipes. As the Sten is almost only of barrels, The germans believed they were making sewers...

And how long it takes to make a sten? 3 days. Me and my dad made one. Took the magazine from his MP 38, loaded it with 9mm bullets and fired at some targets. Good working home made weapon in 3 days!

Sten is a great gun.

Thanks all I have been experimenting with hands lately but I had some weird deforming. I need to rig up the skeleton better and It should be all right.

Cherd, I have re-animated the M1 Garand (shell casing and clip ejection, more violent recoil etc) so when I finish the STEN I shall send you an e-mail

Looks good. Maybe add some polies to the rear sight area though.

I saw a photo from Iraq of a confinscated STEN in a HMMWV being used as a backup weapon. Quite prolific.

Yeah, I just dont get it. When I export, in FPSC the hand is all stretched and some of the vertices are like long lines, weird. Anyway I have updated the M1 Garand so I'll send it if you like

Here's the video. It's a bit slow but only because of Fraps. I have looked everywhere for a Garand "ping" sound, but I have had no such luck. If anyone knows where I can find that sound it would be great.

By the way, Cherd do you think you could sign up on my Forum please? I think it would be good if you can post some screenshots of your project on there

yeah fraps is crap, what i do is stick it in movie maker and speed it up 2x, but it looks good XD good work so far
shooting animation is soooo much better XD Your animation skills are gettin fantastic, did i tell you about the "potential" publishing deal, i dont wanna go into too much detail because im trying not to get carried away incase it backfires, but if it works out then this could be good XD

the games been a bit slow progress wise for the last couple of weeks, and will be for the next couple, got my AS exams, so i have to concentrate on that!
But its comforting to know that progress is still being made with the weaponry XD

Oh and Opposing force, ive been in touch with a publisher about the game, and i got a reply saying they are interested XD but i cant really give much else away yet until the game is nearly done as that is when all the other details will be ironed out between myself and the company

Thanks Huxy! I really appreciate that.

Cherd, best of luck getting your project published! That will definitely motivate me to produce good quality weapons. I have been woking on an arm recently and this is the progress so far. I have to do a bit more tweaking, UV map it, texture it then build a skeleton inside it. It should look ok in game...

Thanks tyrano man I now know from another opinion, how to improve it which is good.

Cherd, I was just messing around and came up with a rifle grenade for the M1 Garand. It looks quite good. I am also going to make a bayonet version.

Also, I reckon if that game "Sturmgart" which was made with stock media, got published then you have a very good chance of getting yours published, seeing as it will include custom media. If you want Cherd, I will make some entities for you as well

@ Cherd and OF,

Greetings! I have attached two M1 Garand sounds: Final Shot (with ping), and it's reload sound. I also put in a couple more sounds for your game. NOTE: Sounds from flashkit.com. These sounds are free to use, royalty free. Please put flashkit.com in your game's credits, along with my name, too.

Thanks everyone

I'm in France until the end of the week so I haven't got access to the files.

American Infantry, I would remove the download if I were you. I recognise those sounds from certain games.

Looks good, except the inaccuracy in the reloading, first he pulls the pin back, then he takes out the clip, then puts the clip back in, then pulls the pin slightly and it jolts back into place. Hope I helped!
