Need textures without having them loaded off disk as BMP, PNG or JPG images?

Have you ever tried creating them with DB's 2D drawing commands?

Well, that's what the current DB Classic Programming Challenge thread's current challenge is!

We aren't getting too many entries in the challenges, so this is a small advertisement and let you know what's going on.

So, if you'd like to join in, but didn't think you were good enough, this challenge is a nice easy one to get involved with.

@TDK

I think coding challenges would be fun to participate in and you have done well in promoting them as well as participating. To be very candid. . . you, Phaelax, Latch, etc., etc. are really good and creative and generally by the time I realize there is a new coding challenge you already have 2 - 3 entries that look pretty good. Because I work alot and am somewhat of a novice, I don't have the time to get something together by the deadline, let alone something that would rival what has been submitted, so I just work on other things instead. Suggestions:
1.) Make a separate thread for each new coding challenge
2.) Give a little more time for us workaholics/rookies
3.) Don't submit such great stuff so the slackers of the DB world won't be so intimidated (I'm kidding!)

I think it would be better left in a single thread. But leaning towards what you said, I think a post like this one at the start of each challenge would help bring it to the attention of everyone.

I also have to admit that number 3 on your list has crossed my mind on numerous occasions - not the 'great stuff' comment - more along the lines of experienced coders entries 'putting off' the less experienced form attempting it.

Then there's the problem of keeping the challenges simple enough to encourage those new to programming.

It's a tough one I know.

But it just needs a few more DBC users to get involved - inexperienced or otherwise. I know there are a lot more than the 5 or 6 that enter each challenge!

And to be honest, it's probably the only thread on the forum where a 'novice' entry won't get slagged off. You're more likely to see a rush of posts trying to help you improve your entry.

I don't enter challenges to win... in fact as has been stated before, thinking of a challenge is a challenge in and of itself! I enter the challenges to try and show that with just the bare bones DBC, you can create stuff that doesn't need a whole series of third party applications. My goal is to encourage others and to learn. And it's fun to try and get around what seems like limitations.

I totally agree - The challenge thread is a perfect thread to try out anything. And you'd be surprised at how much you might be able to help someone else. The more people invloved, the more variety there could be! The only way to learn to code, is to code!

For example, here's a floor tile with just the BOX command:

Enjoy your day.

Ive got a tip for the texture cowboys entering here.

povray has a plethora of examples in a similar coding format, this will springboard you up to another level.
