I had a thought when I was on the animation master forums. They are working as a community to make one big movie, so why don't all us DB users all work towards one big game. If we get loads of people who specialise in different areas of gamemaking, some in music, level designers, video animators, modellers, model animators and programmers etc... and make one great game? I was thinking maybe an RBG maybe something like Fable or The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion or Morrowind - make great using something like tdkmans matedit, but if it is going to be a community thing then I'm not going to choose what the game is about or the type of game, we should all have a part in the making.

Just a thought. You let me know what you think?

It has (almost). Blackout has to be one of the more successful attempts.

I thought that was only for a movie made entirely with Anim8or and not games...

I think blackout failed. The hash forum movie - They are making a movie called the tin woodman of oz or TWO made with animation master, they are making a game if anyone is interested in helping go to the site but I don't think any of it is made with Anim8or because I think one of the needed things to help with the movie is Animtion Master

I had posted something similar a week or two ago. I was thinking of framework that would allow people to submit work and have a team pull it all together. Not going to go into detail as I realize the idea is still too complex.

But I realized something as I was trying to develop the framework. Creating one big game together has too many issues. But what does have potential is everyone working together to provide a tool chain to develop games. This is what is generally going on with people offering free apps, utils, textures, world editors. The only problem is it isn't focused, and we don't have a checklist of what is needed.

I haven't finished working out my new proposal, but it would work something like this. Someone codes an input kb,controller, mouse handler. Someone else builds a 2D map editor. Some other people combine their work on terrain editors. Perhaps another group, shares it's AI scripting parser. etc... etc...

The goal would be to create enough tools that are flexible, work in conjunction with each other. Kind of like an FPSC creator. But it would have plug-ins to handle RTS's, 2D games, a little of 3D game maker, etc...

I still need to work on the idea, but if anything has potential, a complete tool-chain would be nice. In addition, a precompiler tool chain and processor that I think Milkman was working on. These are the things the community can work on together, in separate modules, in order to streamline game development for the community,

I think that would be really cool but we'd need like a thing that we can conference on. and have like weekly deadlines for things that need to be done. There'd be a lot to think about before we start something big. Lots of conferences and brainstorming. Also list of people who'd be helping. Other than that it sounds like a cool idea.

Why is this in the DarkBASIC forum? Is it possible for a mod to move this to the correct forum?

It would work if it got started.

FIRST
Get people to agree on a game concept.

THEN
Create/review/integrate implementation design proposals.

Game design has 2 general areas of focus:
1) What the user sees - game rules, flow and objectives plus interface/action layout.
2) Data access and structure.

After the overall game design is agreed to THEN the artwork creation and module programming would commence.

A main design team of five must OK (at least 3 of 5 on main design team must endorse) any proposed ideas/new work/bug fixes by the contributing community to incorporated into the next master source release.

Things would evolve e.g., elements added and subtracted, but the overall program would be maintained by the five person design team. Any submitted changes would be accompanied by associated text documents describing the additions.

You'd need some sort of primitive source code management system so that all previous master source releases will be archived and available.

Now on to step #1.....

With the right design, this could be the perfect modular project.

3. Planets
3.1 Home Planet
3.2 Factory
3.3 Combination Lock
3.4 Key Blocks
3.5 Space Invaders
3.6 Crab World
3.7 Prize Machine
3.8 Bowling
4. Endgame

Start small, and end BIG!

I'm unique, just like everybody else.

Yeah so , how many people are willing to help? First we need to find out who would be willing to help and what area they specialise in eg: programming, modelling etc...

I'm game for the game!

Read the wikipedia entry on Journey to the Planets and it sounds great. I've only been here a few months but I am reasonably good with coding in DBC...

I'm probably best at Programming, but I can also do a bit of indoor/outdoor level creation (Using Maplet and MagicWorld).

OK, any other helpers, we have got 1 programmer and 1 terrain/modeller. I was thinking of setting up a project forum if we get some more people to help.

The last thing I want to do is discourage someone from a creative endeavor - but (and now here it comes!) these kinds of posts have come and gone a thousand times on the forums. I never usually comment on them and might peek in from time to time to see if any progress is being made. Often people are excited about a game they have played and think that creating something similar holds the same intensity and excitement - it's a different animal. While it can be fun and exciting to create a game, it's much much much more work than playing it. It's not the same kind of fun - and one needs focus, discipline, and dedication to see it through - and the more people you add (especially for free) to the project, the more variables work their way into getting the project off track. And if one is a new programmer, they may have to ask themselves what exactly is their contribution to the project.

If the desire to collaborate is there, why not team up for the DBC challenges to crank out the best challenge you can? The pluses are:

1. There's a definite goal
2. There's a deadline so you have to keep on track
3. You'll find out if your partner(s) are reliable
4. You get a chance to see what kind of programming skills said partner(s) has and test your own skills in the process

If you can successfully complete and submit these challenges, you'll not only get good practice, but you'll be setting yourself up for the bigger stuff.

Enjoy your day.

I'm good with modeling static objects... I'm excellent with Anim8or, and if my parents let me get Sony ACID then I'm in for non-lyrics music. (unless you want me to sing, but that would probably be a nightmare to everyone.)

I have songs right now! I went to this camp and we got to use the program and put them in a short movie my group made together. Yes, the movie was stupid but I made some sweet pieces of music. Unfortuantely I cannot give you the songs right now, as I am not at my own house (I'm borrowing a computer), but when I get home, (tommorow) I'll give some songs.

As you all (should) probably know, this forum doesn't allow team request posts.

But, the OP was talking more about a community project and as there is already a Community Projects thread elsewhere on the forum I couldn't really lock it.

Since then, it has turned into more of a team request thread. Because of this, I have no choice but to lock it.

As it's not allowed on here, I don't think anyone will mind me mentioning that there's a Team Requests board on my forums (link below) and you're welcome to use them if you like.
