Long ago, in the mists of time, there was a young programmer who got bored of trying to find interesting games to play (even though he found some anyway) so he decided to make himself a game. This game, was John... (And that young programmer was me.)

Just over 1 and a half years later, after the 7th version of John was released, Soharix decided to make a new John, a better John, a Recre(ation) of John.

So they started making Recre John.

Recre John is obviously not finished yet otherwise it wouldn't be in the WIP thread. But it is nearly ready to be released. Some key functions and important aspects are yet to be in the game but the bulk of the game and the 9 single player levels are finished:

At the end of the original John, John rids earth of the aliens force that decided to take it apart in small cubic shapes. Since then, the world was rebuilt and John given a new home, in a large town.
His adventure starts at his home in "Town 12". (We actually would have called it "City 17", because 17 is a cool number, and it is more of a city than a town but no. Valve decided they'd use City 17 in Half-life 2. So we had to settle for Town 12.)

Along the way, John has to collect Nick's missing hotdogs that somehow managed to get scattered all over the town and the surrounding areas.

Not everyone treats heroes like heroes though, John has to dodge the wreckless inhabitants of the Town 12 province.

John finds himself in many different environments around Town 12 as Nick's missing hotdogs seem to be everywhere.

John also encounters many NPCs who are always open for a friendly chat. There are 12 NPCs in the game who help to explain the story as you go along.

Aside from the gameplay, the maps have had a large amount of work put into them, by, myself, to make them look as good as possible, but still possess a certain cartoony atmosphere about them.

Recre John includes 8 amazing levels and 1 final endscene level.
It includes several detailed environments.
It will include a cooperative gameplay mode, where you and someone else (on the same keyboard (splitscreened)) can play through the game together.
It will include an oposition gameplay mode, where you can challenge your oponent (on the same keyboard (splitscreened)) to a game of collect the hotdogs.
It will feature loading and saving of games and an options menu with hopefully, customisable controls.

Recre John should be available when it is released for £5 or less.

Ty

An update on the WIP:

Already since I made that first post ^^^ I have completed the options screen with a choice of controls: Arrowkeys, WASD and IJKL.

Next I intend to work on saving and loading the game then finally the cooperative mode. Then maybe the possible oposition mode. (This may not be in the game though.)

The game looks pretty good, but i think one of the more important things that should be done is fix up those textures. They look pretty choppy and don't flow around the object. Good work so far though.

The reason they don't flow around the objects such as buildings and things, is because the buildings are made of seperate objects and the lightmapping on the objects makes the texture go dark at the back of 1 object then where the next one starts it brightens up again.

Right now my main area of focus is the remaining points for work.

I am currently doing the cooperative mode.

Maybe I will fix some of those buildings once I am done.

Nobody cares?

Oh well I'll keep posting my WIP.

Now, I have all 9 levels working with co-operative gameplay mode and an ingame menu that for once in my games-creation history, actually works. I also have full sound and music. And to top it off, a nice clean options menu which allow for change of controls and audio settings.

Back onto the co-operative improvement:
It isn't online or onLAN but it is splitscreen which means someone can be playing on the left hand side of the screen with say, the WASD keys and someone else can be playing on the right hand side of the screen with the Arrowkeys. The co-operative mode features no imidiately obvious changes. But the changes are here:
There are obviously 2 characters in the levels.
On level 4, there are 2 boats. (And 2 particles out the back.)
The NPCs call player 2 Jon.
Jon (player 2) has brown/ginger hair.

Here are some pretty screenshots of co-operative mode:

The left hand screen (player 1 (John)) shows the normal camera view and the right hand screen (player 2 (Jon)) shows the overcam (as I call it) which is basically a birds-eye-view of the character. (It is useful for navigating the city levels because the buildings get in the way sometimes and also, sometimes people just don't want to see the side of their character, they'd rather look at the top of their head.)

In this picture we see that player 1 has decided to run himself under a car while the very annoyed Town 12 citizen, Trevor, rants and raves at him for running around near his car. Meanwhile player 2 was dawdling around near the start of the level still.

This concludes this WIP update post.

Hope someone likes this game when its released.

Thanks.

Another WIP post, just a small one though:

I have now decided on the best way to make the game digitally purchasable. (Not telling, because that'll ruin it, because no method is fool proof.)

And soon I should begin work on the saving and loading, the help screen and then the long awaited polishing.

Sorry to double post, but it said in the rules thing to keep posting WIP.

Latest is that I have implemented a help screen and I have the saving and loading working on both cooperative and single player.

Not a very long WIP post, I know, but it means that Recre John is virtually sitting ontop of "being finished." All that is left to do is the final testing and the polishing of the little things I didn't pick up when making it.

Thanx, and yes, I suppose it might be easier to put it in my sig. But it just feels nicer if I can get used to typing it all the time.

(Not like it really matters.)

One of the last few WIPs.

I can't be bothered...

...to sell it. So I am releasing it free. (Feel free to make donations though.)

Once I'm fully satisfied, I will release version 1.0 (Might even be released to day, so stay sharp and watch for it in the Program announcements forum.)
