How exactly does this shard business work? Are they just servers for the same world, or realities crafted by the server-makers? If so, how much can be changed? And do you have to pay the standard monthly MMORPG fee to play shards? And are the main UO servers still up?

Jeez I ask loads of questions

Well I own DoB2, I created DoB1 back in Dec. 2001, just wondered if anybody plays there still? Back in the day we had 150 players on at all times. Now we're down to around a pathetic 20 which we had in the first week of beta.

No you don't pay anything.
Yes the OSI (UO official) servers are still up, but no way as good as free ones.

They are the same world unless a new map has been created, or a new part of the map has been created.

I am actually quite famous on the UO Emu scene. Known as Merlin however.

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.

And your mirror image, of course, is here . I noticed that before now, you know

If I had UO, I'd drop in, but I don't go for MMORPGs...
