Figures in anim8or are basically objects linked to a skeletal frame - as opposed to just objects which are basically mesh definitions. If you animate a figure using a Sequence then try and export it to .3ds, you will not have your animation data.
Blender is compatible - I wrote a script for DBC that exports a specific type of animation out of Blender that is compatible.
I haven't used the lastest version of blender, but as of 2.41, the native .X export was not compatible with DBC, only with DBPro, that's why I wrote a script.

There was some glitch in anim8or where the UV textures didn't export correctly. That could be the cause of the eye being completely black. The UV coords control how a texture is spread over the mesh. Check the main anim8or page to see if this is possibly the trouble.
