I was looking at my 3D models and realized how terrible the last glock I made was, so I went and made a new one. While it is far from perfect, I think it runs circles around my last one.

and my ATTEMPT at textured

heres my OLD one for comparison

So what do you think? Should i stick with it and keep learning? or should I just stop altogether and find something else to learn?

Stick with it and keep learning. If you see others progressing faster than you, so what, some people are faster learners. Some steps you feel 'oh god I'm crap' despite what other people say, I'm actually experiencing that stage again. Keep at it, 3D modelling comes with time and practice, it's always good to commit yourself to as many tutorials as you can, see them to the end, even if the process is tedious, but once it's over, you've got that boost.

That gun there isn't too bad, it shows good work. If you're trying hard and progress seems to not go very well and you feel you can't understand how to go farther, perhaps a change in the program you're using is in order. Or use another program for the modelling, whilst using your current one for everything else. It looks like you're using Milkshape, I normally recommend to people if Milkshape's modeller doesn't work for them, to move that part of the work load onto Wings 3D or other Modelling specific programs (Hexagon, Zbrush, Silo, AC3D etc.) I mean you can mix and match 3D apps for your best uses, I use a mix between Cinema 4D 6 and Hexagon 2.

Milkshape is the only program i can even come close to getting good results with. I can't figure the others out AT ALL.

Zaibatsu,it's like this in all the arts painting,music,3d modeling the works,it's when you think you know it all that you will have problems,it's all so open ended you will never stop learning and I hope to still be learning something new when I'm old and grey, gives me something to look forward to
If you can model a gun like that then your well on the way.

It took about 2 hours, but it would have only taken one and a half. The stupid trigger guard wouldn't extrude right, then it wouldn't extrude at all, so I had to totally remake it.

thank you

It's all good man, just keep practicing. I'm lucky that I have lost most of my original models, because they sucked terribly.

We were all new to it once, and I'm sure most of the better modellers here would have a funny story about their first model/models and the seemingly impossible gap between where they were and where the pro's were.

Lol, my first 'model' was a gun that I had made in MSPaint and tried to pass off as a model. I had no idea what software to use!

Just keep on practicing man. Sepp has some good advice.

I'd gladly try another program if someone else would cough up the multi-thousand dollar fee

I've already tried all the free programs, and hate them all

ooh, ooh, post a pic!

What i really need is an EXTREMELY simplistic and basic modeling tut for milkshape. I can't follow any of the tuts I found online.

Have you tried TrueSpace Zaibatsu? The day I found Truespace was the day I seriously started to model. It has such an easy to grasp interface, camera controls are great. It's the best modeling tool I have gotten to use where workflow is concerned. It doesn't have the best tools on the market and it's animation system is buggy, but it's a pretty nice piece of software. There is a free version out on Caligari's website Caligari.com.

Free music, textures, models, and tutorials.

no I haven't but I will. I'm a little put off of trying other program after I spent money on Milkshape though...

I decided to try something different than guns.

I made a guitar.

Looks pretty good, kinda like one of those machine pistols.

I think your spending far too many polygons on the handle though (trigger part is a bit OTT too), consider what parts of the gun will be seen in FPS view, if enemies will use the gun then consider what parts will be seen while it's being held. Really the grip is the area that you can skimp on the most, so don't waste polygons on finger grips, they'll just be covered up by fingers anyway.

The guitar is pretty good too, maybe the neck could meet the head a little neater, but your certainly improving, keep at it.

In your modelling world, you probably will find you spend money on one program and move to another (I actually bought TrueSpace 5.2 as my first app and grabbed Cinema 4D a month later lol), but even if you do try TrueSpace, I'm sure there are things you'd prefer to use Milkshape for, like I said, you could just download Wings3D for the modelling part and see how you get on, I mean it's free.

But start downloading demos of programs you can afford (TrueSpace 7 didn't have a demo last time I looked, but give the demo of TS 6 ago, although there is a huge difference between the programs) once you find you find one you love, you may be convinced to buy it...Of course there comes the dilemma when you find that love too many applications.

alright. These are some lamp models I made last night. I modeled them after actual lamps that are in my bedroom, complete with on/off switches.

lamp 1.

A lamp I have on the head of bed, used for reading light (mainly Stephen King books)

Lamp 2. A light I use to read papers at my desk, and to see when I mess with wires behind my computer.

and for those who want to try texturing it or something, my glock model is attached...

Please leave comments.

Eventualy, I'll put all my models in a zip and upload them to my site, http://www.zaibatsugames.com

I think one of the toughest things to learn when you start out 3d modelling is doing appropriate distribution of the polygons. You're off to a good start on that shotgun model, but if (for example) you were to remove the ridges on the pump and use those polygons to smooth out the back, the final model would look a lot better when it's textured. If you've got it, CS:Source is a great reference for models that are relatively low-poly but still look fantastic because of their texturing and appropriate distribution of polygons.
