Hey everyone.
I rarely post here, but I was wondering the following...

What is the best (in your opinion), easiest to use, and highest quality program out there for CG Art?

I am proficient in Sketchup and Milkshape, and am learning the trial of 3DSM9, but I still can't quite find the perfect one.

The only information I have is this-

Blender is easy to use once you learn the hotkeys.

3DS Max is complicated, but with practice you'll "learn your way around."

Maya is great for 3d, but is most commonly for handeling high polygon models for animation.

I am looking into Cinema 4D (I think it's called), and want to pursue a career with that. But I still need suggestions. And trust me, I have plenty of time to learn these programs, now that school's out.

Thanks, please reply.

Maya is basically industry standard because.. well there's some technical reasoning and everything but honestly it freakin' rocks is the reason why.

I could explain what makes it so great, but it's an experience tbh
Like an awesome video game; there's no point in saying what makes Gears of War, Forza 2 or Viva Pinata so awesome.. they just are.

Viva Pinata, hehe

back to topic, read 3d board rules, lol...this post will be locked soon

anyway, for free, go with Wings3D and Blender, both are good, and easy to use.

for industry, i've only used Max, so thats what i would recommend. i've never thought 3ds max was hard to learn, i think it's very easy to use. maybe thats me...blender has a most complicated system when first using it. only used maya once, and that was for 20 mins

Truespace IMO has a really easy to learn and use interface. It may not have all of the features of 3dsMax and Maya, and it's animation system is buggy, but hands down it is the easiest modeler I've ever got my hands on.

Free music, textures, models, and tutorials.

Viva Pinata is definetley awesome, don't laugh .

And I think Blender is the number 1 modelling program out there.
Instant fluid and particle effects anyone?

defiantly look into Cinema 4D it's great, fairly easy to use and, one you get used to it, really quite powerful.

Industry Standards Apps tend to be Maya and 3DS Max, with Softimage|XSI creeping into the scene more and more (Just because they're industry standard, doesn't mean you have to buy them if you're seeking a career in 3D - but it'll help for certain jobs). Cinema 4D and Lightwave are two awesome programs - Lightwave is loved for it's renderer. But both are fairly powerful, out of all of the main 3D packages I've played with, Cinema 4D was the easiest to get the hang of, with lightwave in second. I think when trying the latest demos, I fell in love with Lightwave, Cinema 4D 10 (currently using 6) and Softimage|XSI

However can you afford these programs? If you can't, well Blender would do, however as you asked, I am sure you can afford it, I mean I hope you're not going a differant route to acquiring these apps

Just run around with demos, with your wallet in mind and then decide, your favourite will present itself, like you said, you've got the time, so use that to get a fair evaluation of each. I mean we can't tell you want to buy, because 'the best programs' is a subjective thought - your own decision.

Yeah like Seppuku stated, download the trials and the free apps and test drive them, we can only give you biased opinions about the 3D studios that we use and that really would not be fair to you. test drive these apps and then decide for yourself, one thing i would recommend though is writing down on a piece of paper the things you will sacrifice for price and the things you will not sacrifice and then make the desicion based on that and the practical application of the app.

Cheers,
Dave

Metaseq. It's very easy to learn and there's a free version too. You can use the models in your games legally as well.
