I'm wondering what programs people use for their normal maps.
Thanks

although it doesn't have complex normal map builder like max and maya and other high programs, you can create normal maps in Blender. You can, even with complex models. You just have to make sections of the normal map separate, then paste them all together and position rotate to the right area. Theres loads of tuts on the subject, and blender is free.

Normal map its about the texture, you have to make a special texture from the original texture like user Sp3ng says using software like photoshop or Gimp.

I have a demo made with DB pro that I had download from the spanish dark basic pro oficial site.

Inside the .rar you will see both textures the original and the "normal" texture and also if you have DB pro you will se how it works.

I know what he's talking about, there is software that can take a high poly model and a low poly model, and create a normal map that will make the low poly one look like the high poly one. I downloaded one a while back, lemme see if I still have it...

[2 and a half minutes pass looking through my huge start menu...]

It's called NVIDIA Melody, and I don't know how well it works because I haven't gotten a chance to mess with it too much.

I tested it out with two models that weren't even anything alike and got some "interesting" results. Hahaha.

Also, you might want to scroll down the page a little, there is a thread titled "FREE NORMAL MAPPING PROGRAM!!"

Make a normalmapping texture its easier than make two models. Its just one click.

Yeah you're right. I actually do have that plugin for the GIMP, I was just giving him the name of the program he was asking about.

Yeah, I don't know how good that program actually is. I got it to work earlier but it took about 5 minutes to create the normal map. Like some other people on here have said, I'd go the route that converts your textures into normal maps.

Here's a great tutorial for working with inexpensive and free programs to make normal maps for your models:

If you've got the cash, spring for zbrush. But then again if you do have the cash, I always wanted to meet a millionaire myself.

zBrush is definitely awesome, but it is very expensive. I don't think I could use it exclusively either and am used to 3ds Max myself, so that'd mean buying both... yikes.
