3 Dimensional Chat / model does not render materials

Sorry if this has been covered already, but I am wondering how I can make darkbasic render the materials used in my model.

I created the model in 3d studio, and set some material properties like specularity, ambient, diffuse, etc. But when I load the object in darkbasic, it is just dull colored only, and does not render the specific material properties like in 3d studio.

I tried exploring the commands under basic 3d commands --> appearance, and even tried saving the materials to a seperate fx file, and using SET EFFECT ON, but it then rendered the whole model solid black. I think I am missing something simple.
