Is there a problem with the BYTE data type? This code doesn't work:

FUNCTION LOADMAP(FILENAME$, SIZE)
   LOCAL TMP AS BYTE
   LOCAL Y AS INTEGER
   LOCAL X AS INTEGER

   OPEN TO READ 1, FILENAME$
   FOR Y = 1 TO SIZE
      FOR X = 1 TO SIZE
         READ BYTE 1, TMP
         MAP$(X, Y) = CHR$(TMP)
      NEXT X
   NEXT Y

   CLOSE FILE 1

ENDFUNCTION

But if you change TMP to type INTEGER, it does work.
