Laser scanners are extremely unrealistic for games. The mesh is way too hi-poly the mesh flow and design is useless when it comes to rigging the thing, and there are just way to many artifacts and broken seems. By the time you get the model scanned in, optimize the model insanely for polygons, move the mesh around so it makes some sort of sense, and make sure all seams are joined properly, you could have modelled the thing yourself, and it would've turned out better.

Ruccus has a point, But the Scanner itself could be used to create some crazy Normal Maps. Infact its probably ideal for that sort of thing. You can capture the 3D data to convert to a normal, and also the texture itself. Job done.

It will probably waste more time trying to create a cage for the normal map than it would be to just create the high poly and then create a normal map from it.

well, the scanner might have a use for normal maps, but everyone seems to be forgetting the biggest hurdle here;
