Indeed and lots of it, Search the web! there are tons of tutorials on the how to's of texture making. One good way of going about it is to take actual pics using a high res camera. from there take them into a texture program or paint program, take clippings from your pics and make them seamless.

texture maker can do a nice job and it's pretty cheap.

That depends on the style you are looking for. I think first you need to decide what style the particular model will need and then research techniques to make it happen.

I highly recommend the book "2D artwork and 3D modeling for game artists" by David Franson. It is aimed at Photoshop and 3ds Max though (the programs I use), but some of the concepts are universal.
