FPSC Classic Product Chat / Entity Workshop 2 "The Sequel" W.I.P

I was going to have an Entity Workshop 1.5, but I've decided to include all the features on my hit list and make a version "2" instead.

I'd like to thank the community for your suggestions... Now i can not include all of them, but some are going to be included and some are already in a working version.

I think it's time to lift the curtain on the proggie so far:

Currently included:

Hide/Show Grid - Pretty obvious really, it allows you to remove and restore the grid from the workspace

Navigtaion Panel - this is still a work on progress, but it allows quick access to all camera controls, making EW2 laptop friendly.

Material Index Panel - The most significant update allows you to specify a material index for your exported objects, give your custom entities a solid physical sound from the 14 pre-set index values build within FPS Creator.

Material Index Panel :

Okey cokey, pig in a pokey!

Right, the latest 3 features which are now complete:

- TGA ( Targa ) Image import support

Pretty self explanatory, you can now specify a TGA image file to texture your imported entities.

- New Zoom Tool

The new zoom tool, which can be accessed from the navigation panel, allows uncapped camera movement, zoom right in/through your models, and zoom right out to capture those large entities.

- Freehand Tool

Similar to the control key function in EW1, this tool allows you to aim the camera using the mouse. However with the free hand tool the camera retains its position. Combined with the new zoom tool you can now move you camera to any position/space within the workshop floor, see pictures below:

Imitate the view/perspective of the player with the freehand tool.

Fly above those tall entities using the Pan Up and Down tools.

Zoom right in and position the camera in anyway you see fit.

that's all for now

Yay!

I dont know wether this would be good but this is my idea:

Be able to stack up the segment guides So if for example I wanted to make a two story pillar I know how high it needs to go, just my idea.

Keep it up,

Attached to this post is the beta version of Entity Workshop 2

Yes I have decided to release a public beta as I have changed a vast amount of the original coding, It would take me rather a long time test it thoroughly so I am allowing the community an opportunity to put it through its paces. Generally I'm after bug / glitch reports as opposed to new feature suggestions ( at the moment anyway ). So yes, judging from this post the full EW2 will still be a free product.

Right down to business, my latest additions are features which have been suggested by the community, I actually think all three are suggestions made by Nickydude:

The Mannequin

Plucked from the primitive library of Cinema 4D ( well I wanted a Mannequin anyway, and the one in Cinema 4D does as good a job as any ) The Mannequin provides a height guide for the player within your FPSC games. you can move the Mannequin using the Arrowkeys.

Smarter Open Dialogs

Pressing the Import Texture/Entity/FPSC entity buttons now reveal an open dialog box which targets their specific folders, which removes the need to endlessly navigate between the Entity Template folder and the Textures folder.

Smarter Saving

Another Nickydude suggestion, I added a simple error catching device which prevents you from saving over a previously created entity with the same name. Simple but effective:

So let's recap on what EW2 has now:

- TGA file support
- New navigation system
- Material Index Panel
- Grid visibility control
- Mannequin scale guide
- Smarter open dialogs and saving

As previously mentioned, good feedback would be any bugs or glitches experienced, screen shots will also help me out.

Installing

1. Simply place the "Entity Workshop 2-beta.exe" file from within the attached zip and place it inside your original EW folder ( so it appears in the same file location as the original EW ).

2. Then Delete the "config.ini" file created by EW1

3. Start EW2-beta.

Have fun and enjoy the software

EDIT: ahaa! helps if I attach it

This is excellent, well done

I'll add all my findings to this post.

1) If you have an entity open, then go to import another but cancel, the entity already loaded is removed.

2) Perhaps an 'entity info button' that will bring up info about what the name of the loaded entity is, what texture it has applied, what material index has been applied to it, that sort of thing.

3) Instead of looking for each texture type separately, looking for all acceptable gfx in one operation would be better:

Files of type: (*.jpg|*.dds|*.tga|*.bmp)

4) When trying to save a textured entity (I've tried 2 different ones), I get this error:

Runtime Error 500 - unknown image error at line 657

and EW just quits.

5) After loading an entity then going to load a texture, the texture directory is pointing to the entity directory that I've just loaded the entity from.

Superb work Nickydude, now hopefully i'll be able to solve 2 of the issues here:

Quote: "4) When trying to save a textured entity (I've tried 2 different ones), I get this error:

Runtime Error 500 - unknown image error at line 657

and EW just quits.

5) After loading an entity then going to load a texture, the texture directory is pointing to the entity directory that I've just loaded the entity from."

Now when I dragged the EW2 .exe file onto the desktop and activated it immediately, I received both of these issues. After copying both the Textures folder and Templates folder onto the desktop as well, the problem disappeared.

Make sure that your EW2-beta .exe file lies in the same folder as both the Templates folder and Textures folder of EW1

Let me know if that solves the issue. Many thanks

What is the difference between this program and MagicFPS. When I create a model of normal size (I'm using AC3D 6.2) and open it in EW, it is very tiny. When I open it in MagicFPS, it appears to be the size which I created it.

Am I doing something wrong? EW has many features I would like to use, but at the moment, It's not possible.

Best.

I'm sorry, my answers are limited. You must ask the right question.

Hi folks,

Been a little busy of late. I am trying to recreate some of the reported problems but i'm not having much luck. I do have a few tricks up my sleeve though

Nickydude: Thanks for the feedback, still slightly stumbled about the image error issue, but ill try a few things within the week hopefully.

xplosys: If your imported models appear out of scale, try both import buttons ( Entity Template Import button and/or FPSC Entity Import button.) Does any of these buttons accurately import the object?

If you are running Vista, you need to run Entity Workshop as an administrator, otherwise you'll get an error message.

@ fata error, FernandoK and FastBurst

First of all, wow all your names begin with "F", secondly a big thanks for checking out the program ( if you did anyways ).

Could I trouble you chaps to answer a few questions ?

- How did you install the beta ? (if different to the described method)
- What OS are you using ?
- When you click the Import Texture and Import Entity buttons, do they open up folders which point to those exact locations? e.g your textures folder appears when you click the import Texture button.
- Any weird things, bugs, oddities ?

A big thanks guys, any input here is very much appreciated, this also goes for anyone else who has kindly checked out the beta file on the first page.

@ FernandoK

Is this true that the error appears upon using the program without admin privileges? If this is right I could add this useful info to the EW website, thanks for sharing it with me

@ Wehtam - I installed with the following.

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate Edition , Installed perfectly. I ran the program fine however it asked me to find the FPSC directory which is fine by me, but when I went to look , I found I actually didnt even have it installed on this PC.

So now I'm installing it over again. But How do I change the program to see the folder again? The message that popped up said it would only have to do this once.

I will be able to dig my hands into it a little further later. I will tell you for sure if I run into any bugs. Didn't have any as of yet. And I didn't even have to run as administrator.

Brilliant stuff! I'm glad you like it, I'm even happier everything has worked as it should. Thanks for your help FastBurst.

NickyDude:

Have you had any luck at all? could I ask what operating system you are using?

Xploysys:

Did you have any luck with importing your custom models? Try using both import model buttons (Entity template import and FPSC Entity import buttons) and see if that corrects the scaling issue.

Thanks again for you help chaps

I'm running Vista Basic. I installed the beta by copying it into the Entity Workshop directory. Everything works fine, directories, etc. I haven't tried it with custom models. Everything I've made is rather large in scale.

Hey bud,

Love your work and great product I use it all the time.

Some suggestions for the program.
Add options like the TGC entity maker so you can select if the entity is a character, item, weapon, or object etc and add options depending on option selected. Like sound files.

Add the ability to create segments as well. That would make this program above all.

Thanks a million for your time, James (AKA FastBurst)
