Selling online, advice?

Selling online, I am sure I had a link form here that had a list of resources to those selling things online, it had everything from programs to make a shop to programs that had templates to make cd covers, Ive searched for it but to no avail, perhaps my memory fails me and it wasn't even from fpsc.

So I will make a thread for people selling online, what is needed and what to do, I am sure this is relevant for fpsc users both to sell their games and there content packs for game development.

Ill cover my own problem which I hope you can help with.

I need advice on selling game content online, I have a skybox pack, 32 high quality sci/fi and fantasy skyboxes. I want to set up a shop on my web site to sell my skyboxes,I need to set up a new web site, I have a template I can alter, and set up my web shop, I need an easy to use web editor to edit it, something very easy to use, I want to edit my new web template easily, Its only simple editing, but I need to do it in a hurry, so simplicity in working the program is most important. Do you know any programs that allow me to edit a web site, alter tables add links etc that are quick and easy to use?

Then I need to set up a shop, I need advice on this, what to do, how to go about this and what are the options.

Hopefully this thread can help myself and others that want to sell content online.

Well you could use yahoo web hosting. It comes with a free and easy to use web design program. And its cheap! I use it for my site. I also use pay pal to recieve payments. There are pro and cons with pay-pal, but considering what other merchant accounts charge, its the lesser of 2 evils.

Like I said, I have my own web site and domain.

http://www.avantivita.com

what I want is a web program I can edit pages with, not the flash site I have now, I am not editing that, just some simple pages, I have a simple template, I just need to edit it, something like a simple version of DreamWeaver, I want something simple to edit web pages, I used to use web dwarf, its a WYSIWYG program, it doesn't open html documents and uses its own format, so its useless for editing other peoples templates, I see there are these click of a button use the wizard to make a web site, well they suck as you can only do what they present with the wizard, I need something like dreamweaver but simple to use like pick it up and make a site with it straight away. I stress simple, I need to be up and running straight away, not struggling to add a frame or get the text the right size, there must be a bunch of easy to use web editors that enable one to make a web site, ie a html document, put in frames and links and alter ready made templates etc.

Sometimes I use FrontPage to quickly create a table and cell layout, then I just edit the html by hand from there. That's really about all I use, so I don't have any experience with this but it looks pretty simple.

Check it out here: http://nvu.com/index.php

Also, Check this out: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/releases/ Very similar to FrontPage, but free.

Same for selling online. While I use PayPal in a very limited way, I wouldn't highly recommend it. It's a little scary if you ever do much in sales, but the alternatives are scarce. I hear Google Store is good, but at the moment they don't allow sales of download media.

Best.

I'm sorry, my answers are limited. You must ask the right question.

Try looking at the following it is free. It can be customized by you to look any way you like. They also have theme templates that are free to download if you like. All you need is a host that supports MySQL and PHP. Its really easy to use.

[href]www.xoops.org[/href]

For selling things I recomend OSCommerce.

http://www.oscommerce.org/

It is a free online store program that you set up and customize and it can be setup to take payment through paypal and many other ways. It also supports international currency.

Again I say, they are both free.

downloaded xoops-2.0.16zip, opened it, no file to install this just a bunch of files, not sure if its an upgrade the full thing or what, site download all confusing about what you use or download, templates, many are missing images, or have wrong ones posted.

now this is what I dont like, we cannot even download the right files or if the are its a lot of messing about copying files and messing with settings, think ill delete this as I cannot even see an install or if its installed how to start the program.

Like I said, its simple editing, I want to be able to do that in no time flat.

Ill check out the shop program later when i get a web page editor first.

fallen one,

xoops is a php web based system, not a desktop application. You need to upload it to your web server.

Best.

Xoops is a content management system and more. When uploaded to a PHP/MySql enabled server, it allows you to manage your content, users, store and more. Probably more than you wanted, but you'll need to read up on it if you decide to use it.

If you are using shared hosting, you'll need to create a MySql DB in advance for the system to use. If your on a Linux server, you have to know about permissions and how to set/change them. Once this thing is set up, it works well and saves time, but if you're not experienced with such things, it's difficult to set up the first time.

If you want something to use on your desktop, try http://www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/releases/

Then you'll just need to upload your changed files when you're done.

Best.

right tested that sea monkey, its a web browser, i don't see anything to edit web pages or make them, it opens a Netscape browser. So that's useless.

As I state in the post, I want a simple program to make web pages.
ie photoshop for web pages, judging by the sheer number of trash web sites littering up the net someone is making these, I am not being blown away by the high brow content so I presume there are easy to use web design programs, I dare say even free ones at that, we have wings 3d and delgine for 3d models, where are the same in web design.

I want to make my web site in a couple of hours that's it, ease of use is number one, I don't have time to mess about.

I am going to try the coffe cup one, see how I get on, I look for what is easiest and quickest, one needs to get things done fast, if you want to even think of making games and dont have 70 designers like a major studio, then that is what you have to do, time is most important of all for the indie dev

The best way to make a site is to do it yourself with HTML but that way isn't for everyone, try Trellian WebPage, that's pretty good for editing websites, http://www.trellian.com/webpage/

Not sure about the best way to sell stuff over the internet though, I'm not good at selling things anyway

Ill try some of these programs out, what I'm looking to do is look for the simple practical options that I can do and then pass on to other developers, At the moment I am publishing my own content for developers to use that will give experience of setting up online stores and give an into to marketing, from that I have 2 fpsc games to make, sort term development, the first I will look into self publish and try my own marketing and retail distribution, from that I can work on to bigger projects, different engines port to consoles etc, start small and work up, learning as one goes.

For what you want to do, reading and learning everything you can are your best friends. I have been in the business of doing websites for people since the day when Hyper Text Markup Language was still true backbone of the internet. Now people are using things such as XML, ASP, WebDNA, Flash and a host of other web languages. I don't do websites anymore for other people because there is just no money in it anymore. If your going to make your own site to do exactly what you want then don't settle for getting close to what you want. Read read read!! Make the best site that you can possibly do and then sit back and look at it and ask yourself one question. Is this site what I envisioned it to be? If the answer is "yes" then you are good to go. If the answer is "no" then you need to read some more.

You mission, if you choose to accept it....good luck.

Thats true, but im in the game design business, not the web design business, its just a means to an end to put my games stuff online. So I dont have time to read all about web design when I have games to make.

I could ask someone to do the web design work for me and in exchange Ill give something back, It not much work, its less than an hours work, perhaps half and hours work. Im not sure if that is a breach of rules of the forums, ill do a search or ask a mod, I could offer either a free copy of the sky pack, the quality is professional AAA game quality of top of the range 32 skyboxes, or offer one of my skins for a fpsc character.

I could have a fully function store up and running for you. It would take less than a day. All I would need is the login details for a host that supports PHP ,MySQL and secure directories. I would do it for the sky box pack. Once the site is in place you will be able to add and delete things yourself easily. It will have a backend where you can manage it with point and click ease.

Only problem is that I have no clue about your sky pack I search the forums and found all you posts. There is no mention of a sky pack. All I found was 2 sky packs. One was done by Wehtam_ and the otehr was done by Pulsar Coder.

Can you please provide some screenshots of some of the sky pack contents?

Have any users sold things on other peoples stores, what is the deal there? how can one trust a vendor to be honest with the amount of sales of your product? Or is the download from your site but routed through the vendors site and one pays a commission to the vendor? Just how can one track the real sales of the product?
How can we trust sites that sell your digital media, ie models textures etc?
