I was Curious of a couple of things.

1. What Language was Runescape written in.

You can find Runescape at www.runescape.com

Is it possible to Create an online game similar to this with DarkBASIC

Runescape is written in Java.

And yes, it technically is possible, but very unlikely.

You could not make an in-browser game like Runescape in Dark Basic, and it would take years to make an MMO of that scale in-browser or not.

@ USD Blades
I'm guessing you are new? If you really want to make an mmorpg you don't have to dive right into it, there are lots of "mini-game" ideas in runescape, try re-creating these first, it will give you an idea of how huge the game is and also hopefully spark some ideas of your own.

RPG? Surely a space invaders type game is easier?

Yeah, and an RPG is easier than an MMORPG

True, but you were suggesting that he starts with an RPG (Assuming this is his first game)
By the way, sorry for sounding so obnoxious.

lol nicely put.

I didn't really mean make an entire RPG, just make parts of one that will work on their own or games like space invaders (I'm gonna make space invaders!). If you dive in at the deep end, even if you are extremely clever and can patch together an RPG with a few commands, it will have lots of holes in it and probably collapse in on itself and destroy your computer!
You'd also have the frustration of spending hours working on something and seeing little progress (I have done this), thats what happens when you try large projects.
As for the MMO part, I am allergic to those letters and personally wouldn't go near them until I can make a commercial quality game.
Sorry if I am ranting at you but I'm getting sick of people asking how to make an MMORPG! and I've only been on here for a couple of months!!!
and... relax

Well let's see the finished version then...

What's that, you didn't finish it?

Lol - joking aside, the main reason a newcomer should NOT start with an RPG is that it's such a big project. Most newcomers don't have enough programming experience to finish a small project properly, let alone an RPG.

I know new users to DB want to test out the funky 3D side of things, but it's a big mistake for most newcomers - especially those who've never programmed before.

There's a far better chance of success if while you are learning you write lots of very small programs that you can actually finish and that work, rather than waste weeks on a massive project that in all honesty you will never, ever finish.

But if you don't believe me, you're certainly entitled to discover this for yourself if you want to...

Yeah I took a C++ Class and passed with a C. I was just Curious if it was Possible. Im currently Reading up on TDK's stuff. the day I joined I found them and started Reading and had a curious thought of that. the Tutorials are great. I also did Qbasic. My Final for Qbasic was to make an Animation with more than 300 Lines and I ended up with 700ish and she gave me a D cause she did not like skateboarding. Evil .... Relaxing is a great plan OBese87

Lol

I didn't think so - and I was only kidding with you...

But it proves the point I was making - that newcomers should stick to small programs until they know what they are doing because an RPG/FPS/MMORPG is just too big a project to start with.

In fact, I don't know of any experienced DB programmers on here that have actually finished something like this.

Some have come close and others are progressing nicely (ask someone like Cash Curtis if he thinks an RPG is something a newcomer should attempt as a first project).

No-one has completely finished one yet mainly because most underestimate the size of the task and the amount of knowledge and hard work required.

I'd rather see newcomers write lots of useless little example programs but get a sense of achievement when they work - rather than start big, get stuck, then lose interest and dump DB because it's too hard...

@ TDK
Well said.

@ All
However, I am making a Golden Axe style game with Dark Dragon. I've never tried anything like this before but I hope we'll learn a lot. I find it difficult to keep things simple instead of adding in extra features that would probably make it the best ever computer game! If I could make it lol.

If anyone would like to help us there's a thread up, I think called "community project", we desperately need a good artist lol (doesn't everyone)

We've nearly completed the conception phase and the story is 90% complete (read it at the thread).

The game is set in medieval times, you play as four knights-in-training who are chosen to go on a quest. We hope to make a world with several towns that you can visit along the way, buying horses armour and weapons to help you complete the game. Read the full story at the thread and leave your comments.

Thanks

You can't make an MMORPG on your own (unless you plan living a couple hundred years!) it's like trying to invade China on your own, Stupid.
Make PONG, its the best game for noobs to make!

Your sig was erased by a mod because it's larger than 600x120
I didn't know about that rule and it was 659 x 126!
Isn't that a little OTT? I'm gonna have to re-make it because of 65 pixels!!!
I NEED HELP FAST !!!
