Attached is a small tool, called Sketchup Model Extractor (SME) I have written using ConvSEO which makes the process of extracting Sketchup models to .dbo objects much simpler.

Please ensure you read the SME_README.TXT file included.

I initially wrote this in order to be able to remove the unrequired parts of a model then ConvSEO creates anyway as it has no way of knowing what is of use and what is not. For instance the inside of a box created in Sketchup will often be invisible in the scene but ConvSEO still creates an object for it, usually textured in the default material.

The current beta version loads a Sketchup exported doc.kml file using ConvSEO, it then creates a 'tree' list of all the objects in the model. You can navigate around the scene, select objects, hide them and then save them out to .dbo files, either one at a time or in groups or even whole models. There is even a function to re-fix objects origins as ConvSEO sets all objects origins to 0,0,0.

When a group of objects is exported SME also generates a DBPro source code section which can be used to load them back in and texture them correctly etc.

Hopefully you will find this as useful as I have.

Ratty,

This type of thing is exactly what I was hoping ConvSEO would lead to. Thanks for sharing your work!

Thanks, always nice to get feedback, especially the positive sort

Actually I think I have handled the image saving badly, so look out for an update fairly soon.

I just got hold of the 'World' free world builder, it looks like the two of these together make a perfect partnership.

One of those 'now why didn`t I think of that' ideas

I was going to add lightmapping, but I found the free 'World' tool (I think it`s in the program announcements forum) which does it for you, these two tools together with Sketchup make for a powerful world modelling setup.

Hi! I get a file not found at line 121 error while loading a test object. I've attached it so tell me if you can open it with your app please.

Firstly apologies again for the slowness of my reply, mailback just does not seem to work for me!

This model works fine for me, it is a hexagonal tiled box with one edge cut diagonally, a square pushed in and a couple of circles pulled out.

Do you have the 'Axes.x' object in the same folder as the SME.exe file? If not then try re-downloading the full zip file or grab the Axes.x file attached....

I love the idea but unfortunetly I can't get my hands on Google Sketchup V5. They only offer V6 for download
Is there anywhere I can still find V5?

Thanks!
Sorry didn't think to search the forum for that. I did google it though :p

EDIT: Damn, the link on that post isn't V5 anymore
I suppose the offer is over now. I guess I'll juste have to wait for ConvSEO to work with V6. Thanks for making me discover Google Sketchup anyway. I tried a few modelling tools before but they were way too complicated for me :p

Sketchup is cool, the way it seems to know what you are trying to do, just from the context, is great.

It`s so easy to get going, and yet you can still do some really fiddly and complex stuff too, and all for free!
