Hello,

Would there be any way for automatic updates for an online rpg if the data for the game isn't stored within a dedicated server?

I wouldn't think so

That would mean if I wanted to update the game for special events I would have to make a patch in which players would have to download manually.

Meaning the amount of people playing the game would be spread out inbetween the different game versions.

Maybe an alternative would be to have advertisements in the game to check the offical website for game updates.(of course telling the players the offical website URL)

Also would a large amount of people per game room(say the DBC built in multiplayer commands 256max players) with low-poly modeling combined with tempest and built in DBC multiplayer commands work well together for creating an online game?

I'm not talking about LAN either which is said to be what the DBC built in commands were mainly for.

Hopefully all of that^ is understandable for anyone reading this.

what?

The problem with the gaming community is people think that the resolution of a game defines how good it is. I am not afraid to make a game where the main character is 50x50.

Thank you Maindric.

The other question being would using DBC with tempest and the DBC multiplayer commmands work ok for creating an online game. NOT LAN.

Oh rite i understand now, sorry
you mean like an update "agent" i don't think you could make that with any version DB!
but I'd wait till a mod answers, this requires someone who REALLY knows DB.

@Crazy Programmer

The automatic updates? Or are you talking about the 256 players per room online part?

Thanks

Would I have to have my own website or some sort of dedicated server for the automatic updates part?

How far are you on this project?
Just make it so it can be updated, you can worry about this when the game is finished. It sounds like all this updating etc would take a long time to sort out.

I'm not very far really, just a billion of ideas and a few low-poly models.(some random objects made,~6-7 landscapes made and textured, some custom sounds made,10 guns made with 30 or less faces and a low poly character)

I really wish I knew the DBC program better.
My strong point is modeling as I can fly through modeling lowpoly things.

I've just been trying to round up what is possiable with what I have, so I don't go on a wild goose chase.

I guess I'll just stick to manual updates as it will be far easier.

*points to sig with a sad face*

cheers

You could use your own personaly made server with db. To host the Files you need to upload. Ill explain later how to do it. You would need Tempest. I would Upgrade to DBP tho.

Ekk I can't afford DBP . My exact reasons to why I bought DBC.

I wish the commands my book tells me would work. My book is revised for 1.12 im using 1.13e I don't think that would be a problem though.
