First, i am beginner, and i am following tutorial i found on this web site, and now i am playing with matrix. But its strange, i am on tutorial 8:

http://developer.thegamecreators.com/?f=t01/3d_tutorial_8

and it looks like something in code is mistaken. First my camera appear out of matrix field, and when i change postition inside, i can walk across field, but strange thing is i walk on matrix like it is full of hills (randomized) but i cant see that. I see only big flat matrix. And 2 tutorials before i couldnt see the result of sample code, so i really need some help before this turns into real problem.

errmmmm not too good on matrices.
Are you randomizing the height? If so it might be that you haven't used UPDATE MATRIX, I don't know if that command only applies to the screen output or not.
I am prepared for a correction .

The thing is, did you type it in yourself or copy and paste it off the web page?

It already uses Update Matrix, so assuming you've typed it in correctly, that shouldn't be the problem.

You might find tutorial 9 here useful:

It might help you track down the problem...

@TDK
does UPDATE MATRIX only update it to the screen or does it change the heights?

Thx all, i kinda figured myself that it was UPDATE MATRIX that was missing in that specific tutorial.

Anyway, another problem is is i dont know any of the programs used to create landscapes or more detailed levels, so if you could suggest something i would be greatfull.I read about importing from Sketchup, has anyone tried that? And also some programs for character making, too. I cant find any tutorial about that so i must ask for help.

PS. It would be great if webaster of this site import chat room on this page, like operation flashpoint editing center once had. It really was speedy and helpful.

Update Matrix updates the changes you made to the matrix so you can see them. The heights are actually changed with the Set Matrix Height command (or whatever command you used).

So, if you use say Randomize Matrix but don't use Update Matrix, you won't get to see the changes - you were right on that aspect.

But, the tutorial he is following does actually use Update Matrix, so either he hasn't copied the program properly, or the problem is elsewhere...

TDK has made one! MatEdit look at his website I think it's on there.
and by the way it's spelt "grateful", you can't correct someone's spelling without sounding like a snob

I recently had the same thought, but the DB community is made up of people all around the world, so I think what we currently have is more practical. The only situation where I think it would be an advantage is for team projects.

Well, htats why i also suggested chat rooms. Its very hard to do all by one person, especialy doing animation and coding. And just in coding, i need to think about every setback by myself.

Not to mention that numerous time i stucked on something sooooooo simple, and i just couldn't figure it out. Then later i figured it out and saw how stupid and simple it was, and then i realised that all i needed was another brain who would see the solution then when i needed it.

I think the board serves this purpose just fine
The fact is that not many people are online at the same time.
