well if thats all you can afford it'll do better than most old 3d cards and a lot better than none at all I would reccomment at least a Ti card tho if you can afford it.

Bunnies aren't just cute like everybody supposes, They got them hoppy legs & twitchy little noses,
And what's with all the carrots? What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?

It's not good. It's very likely better than what you've got, but it ain't very good.

If you want something that's up-to-date, get a 9700/9800 (Pro if you can afford it), a 128mb GeForce 4 TI, or decent GeForce FX.

they sell GeForceFX 5200's for cheaper, if you get do an online search for nvMax and Omega nVidia ... but that said the new DetonatorFX drivers add around 20-30% more speed to ALL FX based cards.
Detonator4 never had any real FX interfaces which was why it was oddly slow for new users (or atleast that is what i've been told)

though my Fx5200 went from 80fps in JK2 running 1024x768x32 full options & stencil shadows to 110fps which is quite a considerable jump, not quite 30% performance increase, but certainly alot better.
It also scores around 3,000 in 3DMark03 now.

That one sounds good, yeah.

You can't ask for 'average fps'-- what application do you mean?

If you want to see how good a card is, search for its name and a review on google. For example, '128mb Geforce FX5200 review'. You should find some good reviews comparing that card to others in various applications. That should help you choose.

I'd go with a ATI Radeon 9500 Pro if you can find one. I don't think they made very many. Or a 9600. BTW, if you're looking at benchmarks, disregard the 3DMark 2003 ones. I heard Nvidia put special code in their drivers to artificially boost their performance on those tests. With it removed, the results were like 25% lower. Anyway, the 5200 isn't that good. I've still got a GeForce 2 MX-400, but I'll be upgrading to some type of Radeon soon, I think.

That's the one I've recently bought at a computer show (FX5200,128MB).

It's turned out to be quite a nice budget card. For the price I paid (£76.00), I'm quite impressed with it.

Don't know where you live, but here's the site of the organisers of the show: http://www.theshowguide.co.uk/

I got mine at the Sports connexxion in Coventry, but I'd assume any show in the Coventry/Birmingham area would have the same displayer.

The company was http://www.sunaum.com/esunaum/home.htm but their site seems very out of date.

So, what's generally the fastest and most powerful card out there right now?

Well, according to PCPlus magazine (June issue), it's the Radeon 9800 Pro.

It beat the GeForceFX 5800 on everything except the QuakeIII TA frame rate test.

Of course, the rate that new cards are being released lately, it's probably changed again while I've been typing this

If you want 3D performance NEVER buy a "MX" card. They are only upgraded version of PREVIOUS versions of the card. So a GF4 MX is closer to a GF2 then a GF4.

If you are writing your own programs the bigger issue than the Graphics card is to review your code is it really efficient, can cycles be skipped? of course it really is nice to have the fastest system on the block.

I'm looking for a new system anyone have alienware, does it crank or is it hype.

It sure would be nice to have a ongoing topic that used a specific DBPro program that everyone could report thier actual fps along with details of system.
