Hi,

1. Pretty much all rpg's have a story line so I would plan on paper first and figure out the story line you want.

2. Also on paper, plan how you want things to look such as characters, land, buildings, user interface etc. (Basically a word and picture outline of the project).

3. Now that you have an outline to go by you can start making the game. I would usually start building the world they live in first using a world builder program and then the characters using an object editor program. (But it doesn't really matter).

4.Next I would probably work on game engine, spell effects and user interface. I almost forgot also sounds.(Voices if any otherwise the text or fonts in the game.

Hope this helps.

Open up DarkBASIC. Type in the code. Compile. Run. The End.[/irritating]
I do hope that you aren't asking for code and such. Becasue their Give Me Da Codez threads, and there are too many here.

lol you're starting to get quite worked up about "GIMME TEH CODEZ"!
i am getting a bit tired of the whole "I'm new to programming, how do I make an MMORPG"

@CCG
look at the community project thread, we are making one. Look at cash curtis thread he is making Geisha House, a much better example of an RPG

Or Soul Hunter. However I'm sure CCG already knows what an RPG is...

You'd be amazed. In life I can sometimes get really angry, but I've only had to endure a few of these, countless people here have had to endure countless threads like this, and because the people who post are to lazy to search or even look at one other thread (It's probably like Choose a forum: DB, scroll down, type irritating message), then they would have no idea what I was talking about when I said "FOR THE LAST TIME STOP POSTING DEM GIVE ME DA CODEZ!". So I'll keep my mouth shut.
Ahhh... Darvex made a RPG creator? But I see he's using RPGMaker graphics for his monsters. Tut tut tut. RPGMaker is a bad resource, and I seriously doubt the legalities of some of it.

@INH's sig: Saying 'I lied' always means telling a untruth.

I never tell the truth isn't a paradox. If I am not telling the truth when I say I never tell the truth it means that I tell the truth but this does not implicate that I only ever tell the truth, which means that potentially I could still be lying as the possibility of lying has not been ruled out. However if I'm telling a lie when I say I always tell lies it means that I don't always tell lies, though implicating that what I said is the truth, causing it to be lie, etc.

Yeah I get it lol.
Never telling the truth doesn't neccesarily mean you always lie either.
I always tell the truth doesn't work because that's the truth, but like you said I always lie is because the lie is itself a lie which would mean you were telling the truth (but you always lie so that must also be a lie) and so on and so on.
I get it .

@sniper
thanks for that lol. I'd forgotten what this thread was about .

@CCG
OK, so we're being a bit mean. Making an RPG like Zelda would be impossible, I think it's safe to use this word lol.
But that doesn't mean you can make some sort of RPG.
My advice would be to make it entirely text-based; too many noobs (I am assuming you are new?) think of making great games with great graphics and not seeing the fact they couldn't write a text-based game as a problem. Behind EVERY game there is a huge amount of calculations etc going on that you never see on screen.

IF YOU WANT TO MAKE AN RPG YOU WILL NEED GOOD UNDERSTAND OF ALL THESE TOPICS
* Functions
* Gosubs
* Do Loops
* For Loops
* While Loops
* Data Statements
* Text Display
* Manual Sync

So you want to make an RPG, I say go for it
Firstly you need a concept:
Setting: Where and when does your game take place; Is it set in space or in feudal Europe; use your imagination and try to come up with something original.
Story: Is there one? If so, what is your main character's quest/mission and what are the reasons behind it.
World Design: This is where you must combine your story and your setting; design your world to fit in with the theme of your game and the journey of the storyline. Are there going to be enemies to fight? NPC's to talk and do business with? Goals to achieve? Power-ups and items?
Character Design: Who is your main character? What can he do? Who are the other characters?

This is only a brief description of what you will need to consider, don't be afraid to go back and change things at this stage, thats what its for

All good advice there, although clearing the screen is important too.
