The Little Book of Source Code

The Little Book of Source Code, is a private project, designed to create a book, that's much lighter than Hand on DarkBASIC Professional. Thus cheaper to print, and much cheaper to post. I am also exploring an eBook delivery system for those users who just want to read it off their PDA, PC screen, and perhaps even a PSP. It covers the core commands of the DarkBASIC language, and teaches by example. Each command, and theory explored in the book, is backed up with an example source code program, designed to demonstrate exactly how to deploy and get the most out of commands, and shows series of commands working together. Be it placing text on the screen, making decisions with with IF and CASE statements, dealing with variables, and even allowing a sphere to orbit another sphere. The book itself will be approximately 100 - 150 pages long, and best of all the book will end with the full source code to several games! Seeing many of these commands come together in a real life situation. Demo's of each game will be submitted to this thread prior to launch for people to try out. The book currently stands at 75 Pages long, and is growing by the day.

If you are interested in making a little cash towards the end of August, or the beginning of September. I will be looking for 1 experienced programmer, and 1 novice to proof read, and make suggestions. There will be payment, I don't expect people to take time out of their lives for nothing. These users will receive a sample print of the book that they can write corrections and suggetions directly into, then as soon as the book is posted back to me, I'll pay via paypal, or cheque. If you are outside of the UK, it will be paypal only.

Looks a GREAT product and project, should be interesting to see how this develops.

I certainly won't say no to an offer of free labour. You'd at least get a copy of the final product, reguardless of weather or not it goes commerical, plus of course a thank you entry into the acknowledgements. I've got a publisher who's willing to produce a test run to start with. Plus an ISBN number organised.

Sorry, I have no idea what you're talking about.

It's not designed to be a help documenation replacement, but rather a book in it's own right. I'm investigating distributing it via e-book as well as printed form. It largely depends on setup costs. But I'm certainly not distrubuting it in HTML, if I did that I might as well not bother charging for it at all.

Sounds like you have enough people already, but if not I'd be willing to proof read the book for a free copy. I have an English Lit degree and have been using DBPro for a while, so I can help offer suggestions for both the code and the rest of the book.

I'm not a real programmer but I play one with DBPro!

Sorry, DS port still doesn't mean much to me. All I'm planning is a printed version at the moment, with perhaps the option for an ebook as well.

Thanks for the offer Tiresius, I've had a few e-mail requests for it.

I made a test run print with the printing company about 3 weeks ago. I ment to upload the images then but clean forget. Anywho, here they are, one is a front cover photo and the other shows the inside. The text you see there won't appear in the final book in that form. I sent off a quick 25 page draft at the time so the book will be much thicker.

I went with wirebinding because it allows the book to be layed flat on the table without the pages trying to fold back onto each other. Because there's alot of medialess source code in the book, this will allow users to copy type code directly from the book directly into DBPro.

The front page image needs to be adjusted as I didn't realise the printer did edge to edge quite so litarily! sorry it's looking a bit scruffy, it's been handed alot over the last three weeks. It's been heavily abused in the form of laying on the floor, been trod on, kicked about, handled, opened and closed alot, written in, plus it spent a day or so lost down the back of my sofa. So i'd say it's had a good deal of stress testing!

It is tempting to read the book for a free copy. I've been using DB since 1.09 (classic) so I'm quite good with the basics. I'm not an expert programmer, I use the basics to cover my needs. I might be able to offer suggestions on how to use various commands.

My experience with Dark Basic:
1. Won the multiplayer expansion competition with a game called Cyber Contol Alpha, although I didn't have a network to test on. The price was DBP among other things

2. A published game called The Magic Land, information and shots can be found on my site

3. My current project is my game making software Simple Game Toolkit that allows the user to create a game without programming. You can find that on my site as well.

I've done some minor stuff as well and I've coded in PHP, Omega Basic (Goo Lab) and Play Basic (Archon Fields).

Thanks for the offer Digital Awakening, send me an e-mail (author@dcforeman.com) and I'll add you too the list. I warn everyone now though that I'm only going to pick two people, three at most. Much more then that and it's going to get expensive as I'm shipping them directly from a self publishing printer.

I'm using OpenOffice 2.1 to write the book, it's useful because it's got a nice pdf exporter. The cover graphics are a combination of poser 7, paint.net, shade 8.5, Genetica 2.5 Professional and Texture Maker 3.

I've sent you an email but I got a domain name failure.

If you are only gonna pick 2-3 people (although they offer to read for no money) you may want to select someone with more "hard core" programming experience then me.

Hey Daniel TGC. I wouldn't mind helping you out with this. I've got experience in DBP, and C++/DirectX. So I know at least enough to proof-read this book.

I already posted a request to do so, but I don't see that post anywhere in here.

Cheers,

Yes, just to follow up with my credentials.

I've been paid to program several applications that are being used locallly by businesses. These applications have required a mixture of C++, VB and .NET technologies. I've also been programming using DBC(e) and DBP since early 2003. I'm also pretty efficient with web technologies such as PHP, ASP and SQL.

Don't know if you need this kind of information but provided it 'just in case'

I used my phoenix core wand to cast the imperious curse on Rick.

In reality Rick posted that he wanted someone to do a small job about a year and a half back. Apparently I was the first to respond. Over the next year I did odd jobs for him now and then as he needed them. I appear to have performed well enough to suit him. My usual work is technical support or computer technican, I've worked for many call centres including ICL in sidcup on the Microsoft Windows 98 support team, NTL's net support team, have spent a few years professionally building high end bespoke systems for the Television and Normal industry. So back in Febuary I was given a part time contract to handle TGC's support mails, plus other tasks that will pop up now and then, such as helping out with the nVidia competition, and aiding in the FPS Creator X10 beta test. So basically I keep all the support mails tame now, and do whatever else Rick doesn't have time for.

I'm terrible at remembering who posted what. If you have anything to add, then it's seriously a better idea to e-mail author@dcforeman.co.uk, I can organise by e-mail address then and review.

Doesn't say anything about having to be software does it?

But it is DarkBASIC Professional related, and does contain software, even if you do need to type it in yourself.

How does it differ from other books?
I don't really understand, is this a DB encyclopedia/dictionary? That'd be cool, a full reference of commands, and examples of clever bits of code. Or is that another book?

Basically, it's going to be cheaper then any alternative, and focuses on the core eliments of the BASIC language. This is decision making, arrays, variables, and how to manipulate these area's. It will cover every command designated by TGC as "core commands". As well as many other commands from other area's. Sample source code is being given for each and every command there, so the user knows how to deploy them. I'll be demonstrating the way to use functions and subroutines, and the differences between the two. It's really a foundation course for DarkBASIC Professional explaining the essentials of it.

After all, it's really easy to make a spinning cube, but much harder to make it do anything other then spin
