Maybe some of the pages should be interviews....like we should talk interview some people who have gotten their FPSC games published for tips on level design, story telling, how to deal with publishers, etc.

Have you asked TGC for permission to use stuff from their manual? I have and I suggest you do.

Good Luck

This is a good idea, I'll help with a bunch of stuff

Is it going to be a PDF and if not what document type ?

Perhaps you could upload an example page so we get an idea of the style / tone / format unless of course you don't mind each chapter having the authors own personal touch.

It will not have the exact words or concept of TGC's manual.

I am looking towards a PDF, but I don't really know how to make a PDF, never wrote a PDF before, lol.

@Thraxas

We know about the hints and tips guide. What FPSC for dummies is attempting to do (I'm not crispex so forgive me if i'm wrong) is fill in the blank spots left over from hints and tips, and basically give all the information a newbie would need to know to make a (mediocre) game in FPSC. I'm guessing there will be more version for more complicated games, etc.
Once again, sry if i am wrong.

You're not wrong, the Hints and Tips Guide is for people to get the most out of FPSC once they know a bit about it, it's not a beginners guide so a beginners guide (a more in depth manual basically) would be a real boon. I wish you luck Crispex)

No offense crispex, but judging by what I've seen from you so far on this forum, you do not have the experience to create a book like this, copyright and Nickydude's guide aside.

I guess that you mean that your opinion is the superior, stenchless one? Geez, you're trying real hard to seem experienced, don't you? Too bad you're coming off looking like a real jerk.. Seriously, lose the defensive attitude against everyone, we're not trying to be offend you..

In order to get this thing off the ground so it doesn't end up turning into one of those great ideas that never happens threads.

Why don't you have a serious think about creating a contents page and documenting all the subjects you want to cover in this manual. That way you can upload it and everyone can tell you things you might have missed which you can add for completeness.

Even though this is going to be a noob friendly book, I'd still like to see things like custom character creation and weapons end to end. Just because the subject matter is complex doesn't mean it can't be broken down into managable chunks if carefully explained.

It would be nice to have a real all in one reference rather than getting bits n pieces from all over the place.

A references page to document links for Nickydude's hints & tips and video tutorials such as TGC's latest Youtube offerings, Avenging Eagles modelling / texturing and the biped rigging ones would also be a good idea.

Once you've got a finalised contents page you can start asking for volunteers to select and produce documentation for the subjects they are particularly good at / knowledgable of.

I think you need to actually make a start on this now. People start to lose interest in these things if all they see is people discussing how good it's going to be. You need to actually drive this pro actively if you want people to take it seriously.

This is where some of the doubt comes into this thread. I don't think anyone here hates you, the idea, or your doing it. It's just that we've seen too many ideas that people take from a picture, a website where you can make a dummies book cover, a logo, etc.... and they have this grand idea to make a mega-super-heka thing from that one item.

Everyone gets the same treatment. If you show a picture you drew of a spaceship and make a thread for your up-and-coming World's Greatest Space Adventure Game, everyone is going to doubt it. If on the other hand you show some work, thought, layout, background, experience, people will tend to believe you. It's not personal. Some people just say it differently than others.

All I see is a picture you made on a Books for Dummies website.

LOL. I don't know if I'd have told that one.

Best.

I didn't have Adobe Acrobat profesisonal, only the free version of Adobe Reader.

I managed to find this handy little application which converts Office documents into PDF format though which might help a few people and it's free.

http://www.download.com/3000-10743_4-10660924.html

Fortunately I have a work provided copy of Dreamweaver 8 for my web development but I'd recommend the following free application for those looking for something similar in the open source domain.

Post a table of content to show what you have done already, I have a few tutorials to add to it. And whenever you're ready, contact me about the texturing and logos.

Actually millions of people make their own versions of Dummies books, therefore it is not a copyright infingement. As long as I give credit to the people who made the logos and graphics, it is fine.
