Hi there,
I'm wondering if mipmap works with the current DBPro (4.1) or has ever worked with DPPro.

Does anybody know?

Thanks!

There'd be a furor if it didn't work.

Mine is fine, although there are some general issues to be aware of for maximum graphics card compatability:

Always use square textures.
Always use texture sizes on the power of 2 line. (2,4,8,16 etc).
When doing transparent textures, leave the edge pixel blank.
When doing matrix textures, blend to adjacent squares as the mip mapping over-runs to adjacent cells.

Well, thanks a lot PneumaticDryll, those are good advices.
Anything about using dds format textures?

I dont know for sure because i've never used them myself, but Rich did mentioned that if they are refferenced from within a model file that they should load.

Personally I use .png, 100% .jpg and sometimes .bmp (if i'm fealing dirty - oh yeah baby!).

Most texture formats loading here if they are referenced inside the object.
I heard that dds format makes an automatic mipmapping on some hardware/drivers or that have something to do with it.

Thanks again anyway.

Correction:

I've tested 'embedded' .dds textures and they do not load!
I have to texture them manually.
I was used to have that working on DB, but it does not seem to work with DBP4.1

I have another question to you all mipmapping working:

How do you test/see if mipmapping is working at all?
(I don't appreciate any changes ... )
Thanks and please reply

If you don't know if it is or it isn't, then it is. If it wasn't, you'd be able to tell. It's like recognizing sour milk. Everything in the distance would be too sharp and pixelated.

Try turning it off and then you can visually see the difference.

set object filter objectNumber,0

mipmapping doesn't work for me unless I set resolution at 800x600 or higher otherwise it looks like shit. So try that. Why don't commercial games use mipmapping like Tenshu: wrath of heaven and all of those PS1 games?

Okay, I see it now, it seem it is always on by default.

I turned it off with SET OBJECT, and the difference can be seen because textures are not blurred, and I can see big squares of texture if I get too close to the objects.

I think it is that, isn't it?

Mipmapping has worked for me at many resolutions on many formats, however try to remember guys that DBP only has the ability to use Linear MipMapping, this can quite oftenly cause some confusion to if it is working or not ... because the difference is subtle as the entire scene blends seemlessly but you can certainly tell the difference when it is off once you have had it on.

If anyone tells you they can tell to the contratry they're quite full of it, because Linear & Anisotrophic Mipmapping is something you don't notice is there until its gone ... it's a little like subtle focus depth - it can add alot of atmosphere without actually being noticeable.

that aside DDS don't automatically contain MipMap levels, just like they don't automatically contain Alpha Maps ... you have to export them with these - currently alot of plugins for Photoshop, Max, Maya, Softimage which will export DDS and with mipmap levels.

if you're using DXT5 or DXT8 then its a good bet that it has been premipmaped

Why cant you use different forms of mipmapping? Didnt DBC support different methods?
