I'm having problems getting client to detect a session on the server.
I have the client and server programs on seperate computers. However the two computers are on the same network. I noticed that they have seperate IP's. Maybe this is not what Im supposed to look for. Another thing is the network is on a DSL router. Which of course has a firewall. How do I work around the firewall if this is the problem? What can I do to fix this. What numbers should I be looking for, for the client to connect with. Thank you.

The IP address you should be using for *both* the client and the server software is the server IP address.

If your computers don't need to go through the firewall to communicate with each other (ie, they are both on the same side of the firewall) then the firewall settings should have no effect.

I can't tell you that, coz I don't know how you set up your network.

You can find out your current IP address(es) by starting up a command line prompt and typing 'ipconfig'.

You should get something like this (Internet IP addresses changed to protect the innocent - me )

Quote: "C:\>ipconfig

Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter 192.168.0.1 LAN:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

PPP adapter Demon ADSL Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 61.62.63.64
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 61.62.63.64"

The first IP address is for my internal network, the second is for my ADSL link to the internet.

have you checked to see if your two computers can actually see each other physically?

eg. go to comand prompt and type in "ping 'the ip address of the other comp'"

for example ping 192.168.0.3

this should return info about timings of the reply.
if it times out then you need to find out why the machines cant see each other at this base level.

have your machines got firewall software on???

Smile it could be worse....I smiled...it got worse!

Also, once you have the IP addresses *and* you can ping one from the other, use the 'tracert' command to see what hops the ping takes - it should tell you whether or not the routing is going via your firewall.

Well I pinged the computers to each other. They detect each other no problem. And I tracert to them and they go straight to each other, no firewall. In light of this...is a session command even necessary in a client/server configuration? Maybe it's only needed in peer to peer...
I'll work on this....

I figured it out. Obviously TCP/IP connection may be 1 on a computer and number 2 on another. So simple. Arrggg!!! I could slap myself. And by the way session command is NOT needed in a client/server setup.
Well live and learn.
