Here is an excellent reference for character modelling, it's a work in progress that show each stage of the modelling. Now the base model he makes is low detail and low poly, which is good. Then he adds detail in mudbox. Okay not everyone has those sort of tools, but what he does in mudbox is a good anatomical reference for a male model, this means you can look at it and try to upgrade the detail using that as a reference.

Also, for edge loop reference, check out the works of Hwasup Song, some of his models have wire frames that show his topology and edge loops, which is also another great reference. Look at the Hulk, Hellboy and Adriana (Female nudity). Also Check out his spline modelling tutorial.

I've been using these references myself this morning and they are quite valuable.

I'm using the first link as a reference for the base mesh and Hwasup's version of Hellboy as my reference for the detail and edgeloops.
