Umm... Got photoshop? Imagine what you want it to look like, then see if you can put it onto the screen.

What do you mean?
You can see the HUD in any game you play, so why are you asking us about how to make one?
I could understand if you were asking about programming but the actual graphics are there!

a couple of things;
1) the perfect HUD is no HUD at all
2) the HUD is there to support the game play not distract from it
4) the more HUD you can get into the actual game the better (ie. the actual avatar of the player gets visibly worse off rather than having a health meter)

I agree with Blinkok, look at EA Sports Fight Night, that has no hud at all and the game is much better for it.
Health bars and the like are just an easy way to display information.
Sometimes you need a HUD, i.e. you can't expect the player to know how many bullets are left in his gun, or can you? I would like to see how much difference this would actually make to a game.

In photoshop you can draw a simple 1 colour outline of your HUD in light grey, on a new layer, and then click on the right hand side of the layer box to add an effect to that layer. In effects click on 'Bevel and Emboss' and alter the settings until you get a 3Dimensional feel to your HUD (Some of the other Effects are nice as well, like Inner Shadow). Fill all of the holes with the colour that you want to use for transparent in DBPro, or with 0,0,0 for DB Classic.

This link has a tutorial which just about covers everything that you need with a simple Oval interface.

Have to disagree. The perfect HUD is a HUD that complements to the options in the game without distracting from gameplay or being overly complicated. The perfect HUD is straightforward, quick and easy to use , minimalistic and subtle. Not no HUD at all.

i'm gonna have to disagree right back at you.
1) A HUD is what it's name suggests; "Heads Up Display".
2) The purpose of a HUD is to communicate the state of the game to the player
3) If i can communicate the state of the game to the player without the use of a HUD then what purpose will a HUD serve?

Well, we'll have to agree that we disagree. I feel a HUD can make things far less complicated (imagine a RTS or spacesim without HUD - Black & White came close, but I didn't feel that worked really well)...

I agree with you. HUD's are necessary where the information cannot be conveyed by the game it's self.
By saying "Have no HUD at all" i am not suggesting to simply throw out the HUD.
I am suggesting that having no HUD at all should be the objective when you are designing a HUD. ie. If the information can be conveyed clearly to the player "in game" then that information should not appear in the HUD.
An example of this is the player damage effects you see in games these days. The vision begins to turn red, you start to hear the avatar's laboured breath and the action of the player (via the camera) starts to get more irratic. All these "effects" combine to remove the need for a "health" meter for the player.

Guys I'ld like your opinion about my HUD, It's a 3D rotating menu the little planets are the planets of a solar system, the big one is the selected one (this was made in photoshop , the base was taken from a screen shot from the star wars galaxies game - is only for this scratch menu, it will not be in the final version!)

Well.. make a new base that isn't ripped from another game, and make the planets all look different. That's about all you need to do.

Yep, the first one was the best. In the new one it isn't so clear that your HUD is actually the HUD, it looks like part of the game.
Can we see a demo? It looks really cool

(Can a MOD change the title of this thread to HUD please )

Oh right. no demo then
Is the HUD working at least?
This is the worst titled thread ever! It's not a tutorial and what the frig is a "HUB"?
It should at least be "HUD Tutorial? hmm? anyone?"
Why does everything sound more aggressive when it's written down?
