Take a look on the Level Design Forum: http://www.invisionplus.net/forums/index.php?mforum=fpscleveldesign&act=idx, you might get some ideas from there.

Search for "HellHouse" in Showcase.

$5.00.

P.S. Look at the attachment form right under the space you type in. Remember to use jpeg, and don't run with scissors.

Okey here are some tips:

Keep the player surprised.
By:

Adding triggerzones that plays a sound or spawns an enemy
behind him.

Spawn enemies with triggerzones is the best way
for optimization.

Use lighting in a good way.

Also place entities in the right way.
So if its a storageroom then dont place a toilet.

Think about your level lay-out.
A level that compensates with the story.

And make a good bridge between levels.
So not:
Your walking in a jungle fighting some butterflies!
next level.
I am in space trying to fight aliens with teddybears attached
to their heads!

Try to make a story that the player likes!
So no:
I am in a deserted town trying to kill zombies.

No! Go for the big shot!

Something more like:
My name is (....) i work for the (....).
Not that i like to work for them!
I would rather stay in the pub drinking some beers
and watch my life wasting away.
Ahh well better get to work before they are trowing my (hmhm) out.

(some hours later)

Another day wasted!
And not in a good way!
They expect from me to go to a deserted village,
to find out why it is deserted?
I better hope they have a pub!

(a day later)

Well finally arrived at the village.
Man this even looks worse then my apartment!
What the hell happened down here?!?

To be continued....

Well anyway i think you get the drift?
Dig into your story.

And also...go for a more "wasted" hero.
They are mostly funnier.

Well those are my tips.

Create a game where the enemy is not who you think. Create suspense by leading your player down one path towards an answer, but then through something in that completly throws away their preconcieved notion. But make it believeable.

Games that are believable and based on real life events are more engaging and allow you the ability to captivate your audience much more effectivly.

PS

I am just freaking sick of zombie and Sci-fi epics

Me, too. But a fresh spin can make even these genres interesting enough to play.
