I am working on one of my first models and I am really at the moment just playing around with texturing.

Let me know what you think.

It's a bit big in proportion to the briefcase. Weld some of the vertices too, you can see the seam. It's ok though.

I'm not quite sure if it's UV mapped or not either, is it? I thought Maya usually auto-mapped simple primitives, same as Max.

I am not sure on most of that stuff, I am still learning, this is my first real 3d project.

actually I want the gaps in there, as it looks more like a real table.

It looks good, but really all it is is a bunch of cube primitives with a texture thrown on... the texture doesnt match up with every face, there arent any screwes or handles or anything... so although it looks alright, I cant really say a lot of work went into it.

Unless Im wrong and thats indeed a single mesh uv-mapped, and not a bunch of cubes stretched.

Hey Hey  I used cutface and cut edge and all sort of neat like tools.

uhm ya, but is still primatives. But hey, I just started learning this stuff two days ago. So based on how long I have spent learning, what is your opinion. Do I have any hope is kind of what I am looking for.

sheesh lol

It looks good. We don't expect much out of two days of learning. It takes alot of practice to make good quality models. Though your model isn't good quality (because of the massive use of primatives the mesh is going to be a mess) it looks like you had some fun making it which is the most important thing in any art. I would reccomend searching google for some tutorials if you want to get better quickly.

thanks for your inputs. But, if you use only one primative, how do you get the natural look of gaps. (especially when modeling older furniture)

Also, why do all of the tutorials I find online use multi primatives setups?

also, if you do everything with only one primative, how are you suppose to be able to apply multiple textures? I have only figured out how to apply one material to one primative.

Let's say I add handles to the desk, do I need to do this from the same primitive, or is it now okay to use a seperate primative?

Use and modify a seperate primitive.

Premier Press Books have a brilliant resource.

You can only apply one diffuse texture to one primitive, the point is that you need to UV map the model, using multiple textures doesn't have the same effect, and uses more memory.

So I have to uvmap, then what color the UV map in photoshop and save as the texture?

I can't see any gap problems???
I think it looks great, yes it is a simple object but it's been done in a very realistic way. I like the wear, so many people get that wrong.

Quote: "It's a bit big in proportion to the briefcase."

No no no no no, you mean the briefcase of money is too small lol Briefcases of money are always too small . It is seriously too small though, it should be the same size as one of the draws, maybe a little bigger, remember they both hold the same stuff .

Quote: "the texture doesnt match up with every face, there arent any screwes or handles or anything"

I think the texture is supposed to be like that so it is worn at the edges. and as for the screws and handles; what desk have you ever seen where you could see the screws? and that type of desk doesn't usually have handles, the front of the drawer is usually a bit shorter to allow the user to pull it open.
Trust me, there is an almost identical desk in the back of my shop

I think you are all being a bit overly critical, this guy is new to 3D modelling, and there's not a lot wrong with it. The only problems I can see is using primitives instead of a single mesh.

Your signature has been erased by a mod because it was rubbish.

its a very good furst moddle, you are defanatly better at texturing than me. the lighting is rather flat tho, top down lighting never rilly exists

learn blender, you will never regret it.
