How do I get a 3d object in to DB pro? I can model in 3ds max, maya, or milkshape. I also have Cartography shop but that is not a good 3d modeling program for special shapes.

I want to make some 3d objects and get them in to DB pro.

I also hear a lot about X format. Can I get my objects some how into that ? What is x format exactly?

Export in .X format, which is the DirectX Model format, it is a fairly capable format, supporting bones animation, plus all the usual limb and vertex data. If your chosen modelling program does not support .X, export as .3DS and convert it with MilkShape.

Use LOAD OBJECT in DBPro to import the model.

.x is a model format much like .3ds is. It is the best object format to use with DBPro.

To export to .x from Max, use the Panda exporter. http://www.panda.demon.co.uk.

I don't know about Maya and Milkshape, but there is a plugin for Cartography Shop to export to .x.

Milkshape has JT's .X exporter that works pretty well (with bone animations and all)

Thanks all! I didn't know what the .x file format was. I got it loaded and it works great now.

Trying to add textures next.

Also my doc never said I had to put my file name in quotes.

I wouldn't recommend Panda Exporter if you are exporting animation. Panda Exporter had some trouble exporting complicated animation. I am using MAX, and all my animation done using Character Studio was totally a mess when exported using Panda Exporter.

I would recommend, if you willing to spend some money, buy Deep Exploration. It is a nifty exporter. It export all my models perfectly without any glitches, well at least up to now. You can try the evaluation copy for 30 days.

I have trouble with panda exporting animations too and I cannot get Deep Exploration's max importer working, in Max 4 (I cannot afford to upgrade) .3ds will only export limb animation and not mesh deformation.

PneumaticDryll, what problem you are facing? Does Deep Exploration complain something about MAX DCOM object blah blah blah... I also encountered this error initially. There is some text file came with Deep Exploration to help you solve this problem.

I think Deep Exploration should be able to work under MAX 4.0. I am using MAX 5.1 by the way.

I finally got Deep Exploration to work with Max last night, but it still didn't solve my animation problem.

I've created a simple sphere and modified it with two wave deformations that move and rotate, giving my sphere a blobular appearance that bulges like slime (although it is actually for a nebula). The problem is I cannot save out the animation because neither .3ds, .x or Deep Exploration recognise the wave deformation.

It's a shame, because the effect will look really good if I can get it working.

Please could one of you explain how to get deep exploration running with 3DSMAX.I couldn't do it.Automatic install failed, and i have no clue how to run 3DS Max with command line argument.

Could someone explain the command line argument part clearly?
(Step 2 below):

2) Register MAX server by running 3DS Max with command line argument: "3dsmax.exe -registermax3dx".

Thanks.
