The easiest way to get a reasonable looking character model started is to make a box man.
The image below shows the beginings of how I make a character in GameSpace 1.6

Well thats it for the basic boxman,there is plenty of scope for adding clothes or generally modifying him by using the point editing tools.
The model is 611 faces and could be reduced quite easily,if anyone has any questions or needs help please post.

Trying to give the boxman a bit of an old world look clothing wise,now if I can only make a tricorne hat,the face count is 709 so far.

Hi lion I dont have any experience with Max or Maya,but I seem to remember that Max users had to use the Panda x exporter.
