I've just started using blender, but I've been having alot of trouble getting the hand of it. Can't even figure out simple things like where the undo button is or how to move and object (tried a few tutorials). Previously I've been working in anim8tor and I was doing quite well with that. Is blender just tough to get the hang of? Is there a program that can export .x files with similar user interface to anim8tor?

I use Blender, and I love it. Once you get the key combinations down, it's a breeze.

Blender is amazing once you get the hang of it. It takes some time to learn it though but it really pays off when you do.

SoftImage XSI 6 mod tool is on par with Blender, is also free, and has a more common interface. Both apps are great imho, I just prefer xsi 6.

my advice to you is keep at blender coz it is an excelent tool once you get the hang of it, and lastly, DO NOT USE THE .X EXPORT TOOL I tried it and it took me a whole week to fix, and I only managed to get it working again because of some much appreciated help on these forums (thankyou to all who helped me)

good luck

I was hoping to use blender to texture my lightwave models (alas lightwave V7.2' built in UV editor is a bit lame).

Anyone else experience problems with lightwave and blender?

Mine is mainly due to not being able to import, says I need a full install of python - but for the heck of trying I haven't got a clue how to do it.

Most of the links were to how to program python. which is no use to me as I just wanted the bit to make blender work.

I downloaded 5 different UV mappers yesterday and most had glitches or problems with lightwave lwo files.

Until yesterday I had no idea Python existed and I'm not even sure I really know what its for now.

Penfold ,

http://www.python.org/

A part of Blender is not built in it. The core is written in C/C++. Python is the way to make tools separated from the source, which means that you do not have to recompile Blender after creating or modifying a tool. Go to "Blender.blenderscripts" and open any of those files with a rich text editor.

Blender has a good UV mapper: five projection types, lightmap pack creator, smart unwrap and unwrap. The last one is even more efficiend when you set up seam edges to separate the vertexes into groups in the UV map. There are other three or four methods that I do not know how to use properly. You can also set multiple UV maps and bake a texture from one UV to other.

Funny, I haven't had one problem with the exporter. Sure there have been times when normals were flipped after export but that was usualy an oversight on my part.

One of my favorite attributes in Blender are being able to combine mulitple textures to one output image. I normally texture my models using several different UVmaps. This makes things a bit easier for me. Instead of having to paint a metal texture and then add wood trim all on one map I create the metal texture on one uv map and then the trim on another and combine them later.

Cheers,
Dave
