Please don't reply with criticisms. I am hoping to make the ultimate games with my friends and an over the net team. I am trying to get my team from here. I can't code yet but I am probly going to get DB Pro and the Book soon.
Once I learn loads of code my friends and I want to make a game like GTA 4. I know loads of people worked on that game so it will be hard to make one like it, but we want to try.
If you are a good game maker and want to help add me to your MSN contacts and when we start I'll set up a forum for us and we can chat over the net.

My MSN is: [email protected]

It doesn't take long to learn how to use most of the DBP commands, but it takes ages to become good at using it.
This is because you learn most things through hindsite.
The 1st game I wrote worked and looked okay, but if I did it again it would be coded better, run smoother, better FPS, etc. This is simply because I have learnt how to do lots of things better by doing them poorly 1st time around.
I've been using DBP since October last year and each game I make makes me a better coder. We all on a learning curve and the only way to get higher is to keep writing stuff IMHO.
Then when you at top of curve you make the ultimate game.

I suggest you follow the advise that people are giving over and over but you seem to be ignoring. Start on something small. Don't try to dive in creating GTA4 as your first DB Pro game.

Another piece of advise that has been said many times. If you make a team request at the very least you should have created a complete game to show people that you have the ability to see a project through to completion. If you expect people to come flcoking to you when you say you've not even got DB Pro yet then people will ignore you.

Here's a gauge for you...I've been programming complex business systems for 12 years. I now work for one of the top 5 ERP vendors in the world, something I'm proud of.

I've had DB for around 3 months. I reckon the ability to recreate GTA4 is at least 3 years away, and then it would be a project that would take a couple of years. And that is stealing someone elses idea, which reduces the project timeline. If I started with my own idea, I would add 6 months on to the beginning, and another 2 years on to the development to account for recoding concepts that just don't work in reality.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that's reality. Learning all the commands in DB doesn't make you a good programmer. Experience will.

Thanks in advance.
All the Best,

Yeah sorry DC Dave, if you try to take on a project even a tenth as ambitious as 'GTA4' as your first game you will fail. Programming is fun but difficult. Besides, I imagine that GTA3 was coded by dozens (at least) of programmers and countless graphics artists, etc. I have been coding in VB and QuickBasic for years but I have pretty much avoided graphics until I began using DBPro. Put it this way, I've just finished my first game....Pong(remake). Gotta get things in perspective.
P.S. I reckon DBPro is capable of a feat such as GTA4 but not sure I would want to try (yet!.

david: i think this thread was a little 2 early, and the title "ultimate game" a little 2 inapropriate for your current circumstances as the rest have said master db first then the sky's your limit

@DCDavid

OK - If you want to make a game like GTA, first, aim low.

Think about a very simple version, ie. just driving around in a car, the ability to get in and out, the ability to shoot people. Then develop a few missions where you have to drive to a specific point on the map and shoot someone. Don't aim to have stunts or anything else to start with. Just plan a very simple version.

Do you want Windows menus in your DBP apps? - Get my plugin: http://snow.prohosting.com/~clone99/downloads/tpc_menus_102.zip

I had the impression Vice City was simply an expansion pack for GTA3.

Same here but sure enough, apparently Vice City is a sequel, lol, never even realised. Probably because sequels take atleast a year or two to be made (hell, Duke Nukem Forever's going on 10 years) but strangely enough it only took around 6 months between Vice City and GTA3.

On a personal opinion that's a pretty bad move by Rockstar because now they're losing GTA3 sales to GTA4 ones.

Most commercial games sell most in their first and second months, by the third month sales have already started to deplete and by the fourth the game is dead.

The sales after 6 months will not be significant, and what little sales there are arn't going through the full distribution chain - they are from Rockstars point of view already sold some months back, it'll just be a few stragglers on the shelves.
