Try out simple, go with something free like Anim8or or something almost free like Milkshape 3d, then when you have gotten some expierience with these if you like, go with one of the more advanced ones

I model I clean and I cook for you... AND I STILL DONT GET A COOKIE!!?!!?!?!!?!??

If your new, those two products will be out of your league and out of your price range.

Play with Blender while you save up.

although there are discounts for students, those version DO NOT permit comerical useage in any form.

Dont go straight into these two programs. Start with milkshape or something. If you must however, I'd say go with maya. I've had extensive training in Max, and only self taught in Maya. However, Maya is hands down my favorite.

personally i prefer max though maya has a better veiwport interface. Also though max or maya work well with zbrush but thats another 400+ doller program ontop of the 2-3 thousand programs. My suggestion try all of the freware modelers- Blender(i belive freeware oflightwave), gmax or 3ds max trial, maya ple, and other free ones like winds and such and see what fits you best

me is no can spell

As for modeling apps - It all boils down to which one you are most comfortable with...

I have seen amazing works from just about all of the programs out there, Max, Maya, Blender, etc... And what I have learned is that the consoles and work flow really dictate how well the artist can create in each respected application...

All of them will get you from start to finish ( once you learn the tool/toolsets....

* I use max 8, but only because I started with MS & Gmax before pulling out the AMEX card... ( if I had started with Maya PLE, I most likely would have purchased Maya)

I would suggest not using ZBrush until you're fairly comfortable as an artist (and have a tablet). It is really more of a sculpting program than a 3d asset program.

Think about it this way, you fancy wasting thousands on something you might hate?

I know I did with 3D Studio Max, but that said I had to get used to it for work as we changed to it. Still felt like a bloody waste of money though. Not had a job that has required it since and as such my last version of Max was r4

It really depends what you want to do. Games? High End 3d?

Maya and 3DS Max are much better at achieving high end 3d akin to the pixar movies and film special fx. Though you can create game models quite easily. Between these two, neither is better. I have used both, but eventually settled on Maya. Your choice between these two is purely to do with interface and personal preference.

I've heard that Softimage XSI is particularly good for game developers, but thats just what I've heard

Maya is not too complicated. I'm a teenager and find it easy. I highly advice investing £50 in a decent starter book. They help much more than internet tutorials.

Regarding starting off. I started in Bryce, then moved up to Carrara. Then made the jump to 3ds Max, but ultimately chose Maya. Bryce is very handy for helping your spacial awareness and basic 3D principles. Carrara takes the simplicity of Bryce, but expands it with vertex manipulation and much more powerful modelling tools. Then after those I found 3DS Max and Maya easy. Don't expect to get good fast. I've been using maya for 2 years(.Go here to see some of what i can do after those 2 years ) I'm still learning and still do stupid things. Max and Maya are very big programs, which will have things that you stumble on, which I find really fun. The thrill of discovering some new cool thing.

I'm running on Maya 7, i see no need to upgrade. And I'm still annoyed about Autodesk buying Alias

Seerzack, if you use anim8lr long enough you will realize that you wont need 3dsmax or Maza to do your bidding, seriously Anim8or has some reall juice in it and if you can use it well(*cough* Avenging Eagle*cough*) you have the allmighty power of a god... in gamemaking

I made a image a good few years back to help people create hands, basically showing roughly the steps you take.

I've uploaded the image again as an attachment to this post, but might actually update it as a video tutorial if people want showing a more upto date variation. (we can use a couple more than 80polygons now heh)
