Just got KDE4 working with my Gentoo installation, and this is the first post I've written to TGC using it.

Since I have two GTX 580s, I figured I have enough power to use compiz fusion without any slowdown. This is the case, but something's not right with the window decorations and the compiz desktop cube conflicts with the KDE desktop cube, so there's some weird behaviour when using both.

I do have wobbly windows and some effects enabled (such as windows bursting into flames when you close them).

Here's a demo some of the features, for those who've never heard of compiz fusion:



It really is the ultimate eye candy.

Got a functional cross compiler working today! I can compile programs for windows on Gentoo Linux.

Here you can see "Hello World" being printed to the screen when I execute the program with wine:


The program also runs on native windows. I'll have to see how things hold up when I compile something a little more complicated, but I'm confident.

Yeah, in Australia, it is unusual to not get your license as soon as you can. Possibly because the country's so big and great for driving, but mostly because of our culture. Getting your license in Australia is a big deal and always worth congratulations.

In the UK loads of people rush to get a driving licence but I don't see the point. Transport in cities is really good, and having a car is stupidly expensive. Besides, they'll be driving themselves by the time I can afford a decent one.

That's the thing with the UK. Everything is close to everything. You can never get more than 120KM from the coast (!!), which for us is a round trip to town. We often see Japanese tourists trudging along next to a road in the middle of nowhere and wonder whether they just couldn't comprehend the distances involved in Australia

I also don't have my license, and I'll be 23 in October.

My lack of it though can be directly attributed to the fact that in the state I live in, its illegal NOT to have car insurance, which when we moved up here we knew about. What we DIDN'T know was that thanks to stupid, circular reasoning, is that you can't get insurance with out-of-state plates... which obviously we have since we're not from here. But guess what? You can't get in state insurance with out-of-state plates!

Also the public transport in the city is fine, however I live within walking distance of both of my jobs and if I ever need to go anywhere else it's usually with friends who don't mind giving me a lift anyway.

However, I do wish to get my license by the end of the year, if I can manage it.

I think I'm pretty happy with the way my desktop looks now.

Left: CPU, RAM, Network and Disk activity monitors. Right: Download folder and the "magic folder" widget: anything you drop into the magic folder is automatically moved to a suitable location on my file system.

I think when someone has made you laugh so many times over the years it doesn't matter if you knew them personally, you still have fond memories of them. Him and Rik Mayall dead in the same year, two of my childhood heroes. :-(

For some reason we think of these people as invincible, and then when they are gone we wish we had appreciated them more and told them what they meant to us.

You have to concider that he was also suffering from the early stages of parkinsons desease and anxiety disorders aswell as an attraction to substance abuse. This combined with depression is a heavy package and I can understand how it beaten him. He did however leave us with a worthy legacy. I too enjoyed his standups and watched them all a couple times. However, I felt a certain sadness about him, I just didn't know anything about his personal life and had no idea it was this severe.

It's a requirement by law to have car insurance in Australia . It's not that expensive, though. Not by a long shot: ~$300 p/a for the most basic CTP, going up to ~$700 p/a for comprehensive insurance (including CTP).

If you don't believe me, check a comparison website for yourself. I don't understand how it's okay for insurance companies to discriminate against people because of their age - if anybody else did it there would be hell on.

Because there's a genuine reason for it: Younger drivers have less experience (generally) and are more likely to crash. Simple as that.

Well yes of course insurance is required by law in virtually every place, I just meant it's ridiculous because of all the procedures they put you through in this particular state, for whatever reason.

Probably because our current state governor is kind of a ... ah, well can't say that so shouldn't type it up even, let's just say that even people of his party kind of hate him as much as the opposing side does

If I were older and had just started driving, it would be cheaper than if I were my age and had just started driving. Thats discrimination in my books.

Very true. I miss him dearly, he always made me laugh, especially some of his bits on "Whose Line" a while back.

We've lost a lot of good actors this year, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Walker, Robin Williams, I think there's someone else but I can't remember their name. All in all a very sad year for the world of cinema.
