Oh, I thought the video was new

Anyway, I wasn't really refering to that video alone but to the whole game, there are so many technical features that allow you to do a ton of cool stuff in the game.
Quote: "Really? The two main popular Aussie servers are still alive and kicking with frequently 300-900 players on them."
For now, but like comet said, bukkit has been taken down due to a copyright claim by one of the old developers on the project, this means that Bukkit can't be distributed at all, and the forks of it can't be distributed either. Since bukkit is what almost all multiplayer servers use for plugins which are requrired for the server to function, no big multiplayer servers can be updated to 1.8. 1.7 has already been out for more than half a year (I think) and people really want to play on 1.8.
The server im running has the added issue that we are planning to do a reset soon and have told people about that which makes people stop playing becaue everything they build will get destroyed soon. We don't want to do the reset on 1.7 because we would need a new map when 1.8 comes out and we can't upgrade to 1.8 yet because there is no bukkit. Luckily there is a fork of bukkit called spigot which have found a way to work around the Legal issue of distributing the code and have managed to get the 1.8 multiplayer protcol ported to a 1.7 server which allows 1.8 clients to connect to that server. The server is still running 1.7 though so none of the gameplay features of 1.8 have been added. There are some plugins to fix that (adding the new 1.8 blocks to the game for example) but updating spigot while avoiding legal issues is a hack, on top of that there is the 1.8-1.7 protocol "hack" and on top of that the 1.8 blocks in 1.7 "hack" so I have a feeling it won't be stable in the long run
Now, regarding the legal issues, based on what I have heard, Wolvereness has been a developer on bukkit since the project started and has had his GPL code in the project since then aswell. He is happy working on it with the closed source MC code until things start happening and he, along with the rest of the bukkit team decide to quit. Mojang who brought bukkit 1 year ago say they will take over the development on it which for some reason makes Wolvereness mad. He decides to use the GPL license on his code to take down bukkit so nobody else can work on it or to get Mojang to effectivley open source the whole game. He seems like a total jerk, he works on a project for 2 years and gets bored/unhappy with the way mojang run Minecraft and decides to use a legal "loophole" to try and force mojang to open source minecraft.
What I don't understand is why bukkit still has to be GPL. Mojang still own it, so they should be able to change the license of it, and I can't imagine it using too many GPL libraries so you could probably rewrite those and keep bukkit online.
Edit: After reading some more of the reddit post comet posted earlier, it seems like I was wrong on some points. The wolf guy didn't start bukkit, bukkit was started by "EvilSeph" and had a GPL license from the beginning, then they started incorporating the minecraft code into the project which made bukkit non-compatible with the GPL license. The guy who has issued the DMCA takedown request forked bukkit and made his own changes to his private version called "bukkit-bleeding". He was also a developer on the original bukkit project and issued a pull request from bleeding to the main project which he aproved himself even though he knew that bukkit wasn't propper GPL. When mojang ended up claiming bukkit, Wolf issued a DMCA takedown request because of the code which he himself approved to be added to bukkit is in violation of GPL even though he knew about the issue when he approved it.
The thing however is that none of the bukkit developers knew that bukkit was owned by mojang, when mojang hired some of the devs from the bukkit project, they secretly aquired bukkit too. The wolf guy, and everyone else who worked on bukkit thought they were contributing to an open source community project but they ended up working for mojang for free. I can undrestand why the guy is pissed when mojang change their EULA and sell their company after having benefitted from free work done by him.
