This will be my entry for the Phoenix contest. Anything and everything is subject to change. I am only working with some new segments and entities here to see how they will look, and this will not be an actual game scene. This is only for the required screen shot.

The Game is a very simple premise, and is set in the near future. Many major U.S. cities are plagued by crime, unemployment, homelessness, and crooked politics. The Game is a nightly television show, broadcast by the state run network, to amuse the masses and keep them off the streets. It takes place in walled off sections of the city where volunteers (well, sort of) are pitted against humechs - a new breed of cyber mechanical beings - in an arena style death match. The winners, those who manage to make it to the exit alive, are rewarded with an all expense paid trip to the next zone, and eventually, the next city on the circuit. To date, no one has retired from the game, at least not living.

The first city is Atlanta, and I hope to have three zones complete for the contest. The idea comes in part from The Running Man (Richard Bachman), one of my all Time favorite writers, aka Stephen King.

You play as John Cadillac. As an ex-cop, you are familiar with the way the games work. Being out after curfew, questioning authority, illegal music or clothing.... many are the ways to get into trouble with the law, so you are not surprised when you end up a volunteer yourself.

I will try to keep this up to date as the actual levels are built.

Best.

I'm sorry, my answers are limited. You must ask the right question.

When I saw this thread, I suspected it to be somewhat like Saw. You know... Jigsaw- "Hello Xplosys, I want to play a game..." and you know the whole idea concept but not really Saw. Anyways I like your idea and it's looking good. Best of luck.

John gets his phone into the zone. It's been rigged to detect humechs, and a few other useful things, like communicating with a friend who's watching the game.

Very original story. So I have a question, that guy near the barrel well what is he doing? Or is he just there for some atmosphere?

Oh yes, I was going to ask the same question as you, game lover. I also urge to ask, is the length/width exactly 15 units (the restrictions of the contest are 15x15x5)? I also want to say, are you able to go on that 'highway?'

@rolfy, you're too kind. Thanks.

@game lover and Snipesoul, everything so far is just to see what the segments and entities will look like in game. I'm still working on a few buildings (factory and such) and textures before I start putting anything in the 15x15 world. Actually, more of the game will be indoors than out. The overpass is modeled on top as well and can be navigated, although it will probably be for looks only in the game.

@CLiPs and TJR Games, thank you very much, and anyone else I missed.

Best.

Looking very nice!
But those vents on the buildings...
I guess they are parts of the texture right?

I think they would look better if they where actuall modeels.
I know this is just a test for how everything fits its place but still.

Good luck on this one!

Cheers,
Cheese Cake.

@Cheese Cake, agreed. It's going to come down to how much time is left before the deadline.

@BIG Viking Games and DarkFact, thank you.

@Inspire, the phone is rigged with some extra functionality. John had it setup so it could detect humecs, since they appear to be human. This should help him somewhat detect the enemies before they get too close. With a friend watching The Game live, he should also be able to get info from the live broadcast, if he can keep a signal in the zone.

More buildings and assorted scenery.

I am starting on the 15x15x5 world layout today (man that's small, but I guess that was the idea!) Time to see how much of this can fit into the game and still leave room for play in the indoor areas.

Best.

You can have all the scenery you want outside the 15x15x5 area. Only the playable area must be contained within those limits.

Oh! Well then, that leaves me considerably more room, as long as "scenery" covers all segments and entities. Thanks.

"Scenery" is any geometry whether it is a segment or an entity or a decal. So, you actually have more room for visuals than you might think.

Googled it:

Quote: "The Bet on Soldier programme was created to entertain and to make a greater profit from the greed of the elite warriors. When two such soldiers compete, wagers may be placed on the outcome... providing a healthy income for battle-hardened veterans and sport for the masses."

Similar in ways. However, xplosys stated his premise was inspired by the Running Man...which I wouldn't doubt inspired the makers of BOS as well.

I've started reworking the textures. Here is a couple that I'm pretty satisfied with.

Road with stripes....

and sidewalks.

The buildings get a makeover next. Funny how you have to work so hard to make them look worse. LOL

@Inspire, thanks but I think the "look" is the easy part. Getting it all together with a plot, decent frame rate, and intelligent AI is going to be the trick.

And that's where most people go wrong. I think this game will be able to pull it off.
