Kaboodle!

Hi guys. This is our new game, it's called Kaboodle, and it was written in DarkGDK. And, for a touch of class, the team is 50% female!

Kabodle is an original, cute, addictive puzzle game in which you must use your powers of perception to find the required clumps of blocks. Collect stars to advance through the levels, or see how many points you can gain in one of seven varied game modes. It will leave you, and anyone around you, sreaming at the screen!

It looks like this,

And you can get the demo here,

http://www.retrodev.co.uk/

The reason there's no full version (it's done, but not released) is that we really want to do more with it than simply give it away for free (i.e., we want to sell it) But we're scared about licences, legalities, and just how the hell to do it, which we're looking into. Do you think it's ready?

We're also still looking for music for it.

Please give it a go and leave your feedback below.

Cheers,

Stu + Teresa

Kaboodle definitely has polish and professionalism. The only thing is that the controls should be more clear. When trying to go back, I found myself hitting the keyboard randomly until I hit backspace.

As for the actual game play, it's slightly boring. I can't say anything about the modes that weren't in the demo, but the puzzle mode has no sense of risk. It felt impossible to lose. I felt I could make just as much progress by randomly clicking. You might want to have a different mode in the demo if it offers more.

I don't have time to try it out right now, but by the screenshots it looks quite professional!

@Jimpo,

We originally had it so you lost time when you clicked randomly, but then it became harder to learn and just seemed to annoy people. The first few levels are meant to be easy, but once the extra colours come in, the difficulty ramps up quite drastically. Maybe I should stick a few of the more advanced levels in the demo.

Sounds good. I'll keep an eye out for the updated demo.

I gave Kaboodle another try and after it showed the demo over message, it didn't allow me to enter my highscore. Got up to level 5 and around 213,000 points.

Yeah. If the other modes are as fun, polished and professional as this one is it is definitely ready. How to go about I wouldn't know - probably someone else will know more about it.

We're also still looking for music for it.
I know of two musicians, I could try and set you guys up with one of them?

Please give it a go and leave your feedback below.
Fun to play, not too pushing and not too free - the timer does run out indeed. I would add a little punishment for misclicking, by the way. Minus a single second would work.

Cheers for having a look, tha_rami

The music in the game is growing on us now, although it still gets a little repetative. Why not let your musician friends have a look and see if they have any ideas?

You're the third person who has said there should be a penalty for misclicking, so maybe there's something in it. Although surely clicking randomly doesnt work once level 5 gets going?

Looks quite professional. I'll try it now. I am also a musician so I'll see what style would fit it whilst playing and give it a shot. I'll let you know how I get on.

Well I have had a play and that is quite awesome! I actually think though that the music you have fits really quite well. I'll still have a go if you want but in my opinion its good already.

I played the game and I did enjoy it. I dont really see why everyone is talking about misclicks, I dont even click unless I know for sure that the cursor shape fits the boxes. I think the game is fine as it is and it sure does get harder as you go. I really love how the computer assist you when your combo box runs out cause a few times I thought there werent any combinations left that fit my cursor shape but low and behold the computer came to my aid.

Like you said though, of course the first levels are going to be easy, however I can tell the harder levels will require more skill into organizing your clicks so the level doesnt become a mix of colors. Cool game keep up with it and good luck on releasing it commercially or whatever you have planned.

Thanks

Question how big is your team and how long did it take you to make this game.

"how big is your team and how long did it take you to make this game."

I did the bulk of the work myself, and other people kinda dropped in and out. It took us about 3 weeks (not workign 9-5 mind you). I'd say 40 hours of work went into it, with everyone combined.

We're all used to workign very fast. We achieve it by cutting all the crap out and designing as we go.

Freeware? Awesome! I really enjoy this game, I must admit.

May I ask, what made you decide to make it freeware?

Just had a full play and had a real blast. How would you feel if I reviewed the game on a little column I write for a little blog?

It was becoming less like 'Fun' and too much like 'work'.

Absolutely fine. Gizzalink afterwards.

OK i've played it now. It's really really great! Just the right balance between frustrating and soothing, smooth, fast, slick looking, easy to get into but hard to master. My top score is 229k at the moment. Need more practice!

Cheers Mr Tank,

Dave's wasn't made in Dark GDK mind you, it was done in OpenGL. I switched to dark to get more compatability

Glad you liked it, spread the word

I tryed it, and loved it, good work!
One problem, when i run it in fullscreen, and alt+tab out and then alt+tab to the game again, i just have black screen and sound.

Hhaha very funny. But seriously this game looks (based on the screenshots) pretty fun and polished. Reminds me of a PSP game

It's fun, and tricky on the later levels. The only fault I could find was the lack of a pause button however.
