How do I take textures from a particular model, use them to make my own textures, and then put them back onto the model?

Open up the model in a 3D software that can also do, view and export textures of the specific model, or try to look for the .tga texture file of the model, and open it up in a paint program.

Open the .tga texture in a paint editor of choice.(Photoshop, PS, Gimp) You can also export an image of the UV map from the .x file, but you will need your modeling ap for that.

Once you are done, save your new/altered texture as a .tga and just use FPSCs entity editor to change to your new texture. (check the manual pages 32 though 38 for editing the entity.)

I saved it as both a TGA and a DDS file, and using both, nothing changed on the model.
