I'm trying to make a custom window, and I'm having no luck creating a blank cutout mesh (ala buttercutter). I'd appreciate some guidance on this issue. Thanks.

(CSG)stands for constructive soled geometry, a CSG is a mesh, what ever modeling program u use you just need to export to .X file and bring that file to your meshbank then click CGS on the segment editor.

Oh, I'm already familar with the principal, it's just that I've tried creating a plain cutout in the segment editor with the csg punch flag on. However, can't see the pictures on your site, so it isn't helpful atm

I think I may already have a solution, It hadn't occured to me to use an existing window and just replace the mesh names...

Well I tried that, and it still didn't work. I basically want a square cutout. If anyone could explain to me how the buttercutter works (or if butters himself would be kind enough to show me a sample fps file) i'd appreciate it.

to build something like buttercutter with segment editor just make a shape with a modeling program, which will be your punch mesh and also build a frame/boards/bars. Then export to .X format

Ok, I have managed to get it to work, but it only cuts standard segments. I created a custom textured seg by copying an existing one. However, the csg doesn't seem to work on it for some reason.

Ok, it turns out you can't put lots of csg meshes that cut next to each other , otherwise nothing happens. It does seem to work now, but I'll have to double up the size of the mesh and leave a gap.

I highly suggest buying buttercutter's even though I have not bought my own yet (cash flow reasons) I can tell you I have been happy with everything butters have ever produced.

Now maybe a solution for your problem. Now your talking about a custom window and the example I am going to show is how to create an open window (same example applies to door's to) But I would think this example should also apply to your custom window.

first we set up a room then we place are door's and windows like the example below



Now once we place are windows we go into entity mode right click the window and get into your script editing mode.

Now in the all scripts section you apply
start = disappear1.fpi
main =
destroy = disappear1.fpi

just like the example shown below



once the change is done test and see if this works for you. I hope this is helpfull.

Hey. Isn't CSG a nightmare?

I didn't use a segment creator to write the FPS files for butter cutter. I still do all my FPS file by hand (more control).

Therefore I'm not really sure what kind of FPS file the segment making tools output (and I'm not gonna download to find out).

I would stress however, that you cannot have an FPS file that only calls a CSG mesh. For some reason FPSC will not load it. Try loading the CSG object as mesh 0 and then load a second "null" object as object 1 (pick the lowest poly mesh you can find), and offset it's y position by -200000. That should place it way outside FPSC/DBpros render distance. So it won't affect your polycount, but should let you run the CSG

Yup, found all that out the hard way. Funnily enough, I arrived at editing the fpe by hand, and made a mesh consisting of one face made really small, and set it's csgimmune to 0 (so it totally disappeared). I finally solved it on saturday evening. Here's what I finally ended up with:
