I feel I've come far enough with my project to show some images of what I've done. I have some good (and complicated backstory).

Basically, the game revolves around you, a bog-standard marine stationed aboard the United Earth Starfleet vessel Vanguard, on deep space patrol at the frontier of human territory. Your vessel utilises an advanced wormhole drive, which skirts into other dimensions and back, reducing travel time by effectively years.

Your vessel is attacked and boarded by an unknown alien adversary, who prove to be technologically inferior but cunning and detirmined nonetheless. They manage to rig the engine core to explode, just before you manage to diffuse it. A random and catastrophic wormhole event is caused, propelling you through space and out onto a distant planet. The chances of this happening are practically zero, and the chances of actually landing on the ground, on a planet with a breathable atmosphere are lesser still. Somehow, this leads you to believe you did not end up here by accident...

I have plenty of screenshots, so this one will just be a taster. shows a shot of the bridge.

What about nameing the game (The Chosen) because pretty much in you discription someone wants you're guy. OOO and the game looks great, I love how you retextured the hands and parts of the glock looking good keep it up.

??? Where? The glock and hand textures are in mp9/10 (don't remember in which)

@Avid: I like it, but I think it's too empty. Try adding some more computers, maybe some crew etc... Could you post some more screens? (If you could, then with DEagle because I wanted to see it with those HALOish hands)

Looks good, nice story. I like the idea of having the enemies be technologically inferior. I might use that for my next game.

Of course I plan to add consoles etc, but it does take a while to make them.

And the hands are from the model pack 9/10. I was going to retexture them myself, but they looked so good that I decided not to, and retextured an entire soldier based around the style of the hands.

Just another post for more screenies:

Sample loading screen (includes fleet insignia):

And my ship, the Vanguard:
http://aycu01.webshots.com/image/31600/2002731585432612147_rs.jpg

And a final ingame shot for now:
http://aycu19.webshots.com/image/31978/2003576563722395466_rs.jpg

By the time I'm finished, there won't be any stock media left untextured.

And I like 'The Chosen' for the name. Without giving too much away, there will probably be more people on this planet.

Lastly, I have to recommend webshots for image uploading, it is so much speedier than imageshack and without the ads:

Super nice Avid, You have made some really good shots there.
The Vanguard is cool also. Good luck with this one, yet I dont think you need it from your shots. I'll be watching this one, thats for sure.

Once again nice work man!

The wall segments are ingame ones, but the roof segments are custom. The reason being I didn't feel like faffing around making custom walls when I already had some available.

I'll see how long it takes for me to finish it. ATM, I'm gathering some resources I'll probably need (music, voices etc). I've got some pretty good marine battle chatter too for my soldiers. Since the game will be free due to the media (I got some music from quake 3, now it's been released under the gnu license). I also think I might use the music from W:ET since that's free now.

Ok, this is the shot of the hanger bay I'm currently working on. The gameplay will be similar to the ST Elite Force series of games. Enemy ai was minimal, and mostly required clever use of cover or being constantly rushed from different angles. I'll also give the player the chance to explore the ship before the action kicks off.

The game starts with you standing in the armoury, it is completely dark, you cannot see anything. You hear your comrades bashing on the door calling for you, but it won't budge. Eventually they have to cut the door open. Turns out they've been having power troubles in that section all morning. After this, you will be given various tasks to complete, which involve visiting areas of the ship.

The reasons for this are simple. It introduces you character, and having it completely black makes it easy to blend a fmv sequence in. Go figure :p

Not really, there isn't a flying mode option in fpsc. And besides, you'd just see blank walls anyway :p.

So maybe make a "plasma barrier" floor segment, so people won't fall out of the ship...

Oh yeh, there's gonna be two freakin' huge doors and a forcefield thingy. I've watched enough sci-fi to know all the basic principles.

I use this list for names:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Royal_Navy_ship_names

I don't like the US names, somehow calling my ship the 'H.W. Bush' didn't seem appealing...

What about the H-Vanguard. Instead of Vanguard. Because of Copyright issues with Mass Effect.

@ fallen one - already done, of course, in System Shock 2

This game looks great, and really captures the sci-fi mood. Did you make that rifle yourself, or was it from one of the many model packs that I never bought?

Also - this game looks very very grey and blue. It might be interesting to use some other colours - perhaps have one weapon use only red lights, or use different coloured lighting for different sections of the ship?

I'm not actually a Kiwi, I just randomly thought it up one day.

I think I can call it the Vanguard. Perhaps the British navy should decommission their submarine due to copyright issues? There wouldn't be any basis for a lawsuit. And besides, I've done loads of huds with it on. The name stays :p

Like others have said this looks like the next HALO, not as to say that there is any copying going on just that this game looks like I am going to see on the shelves at EB Games a year from now.

I hate to be such a noob, but what modeling program are you using?

I like Vanguard, it's "soldiery"

I hope you release a demo too.
