Don't make terrain in a 3D model maker.

Use Advanced Terrain / Ultimate Terrain for this.

I can't be bothered to invent a signature

You two have no idea what your talking about. Terrain doesn't need a terrain maker or any of that crap. It needs something that can make a 3d object.

Nobody in their right mind uses modelled terrain, for one thing that terrain is not even useful, what on earth would you do with little bits of terrain like that?.

People use heightmaps because they are infinately easier than modelling terrain, simple as that.

We're going down... in a spiral to the ground...

van I think that all depends on preference though I do agree to some extent. While modeling massive terrains or whole terrains would be very taxing on any engine and that using heightmaps would help optimize the game play, modeling bits and pieces of the terrain has it's benefits. such as:

over hangs, caves and other small player important terrain objects.

I think that a person should have knowledge using heightmaps as well as modeling when creating their terrain. You would be a fool to think you can create every little detail you wanted from a simple heightmap. though as some of the programs get better then things will change but as it stands now you should have experience with both methods.

Cheers,
Dave

Ha ha ha!! You maid my day!

Do you think Blizzard modeled the whole terrain in WoW in 3ds max or some thing?

I think they build their own pretty damn good terrain editor.
Or they used Landscape Creator

It doesn't matter how big of a company they are, they're just not stupid enough to model terrains. No offense.

Although I do agree with Reality Forgotten. It can be useful only if you're modeling like a cave or an overhang. As long as it's small.
