I thought I would give a little perspective to those starting out in cg modeling and animation.

The very first thing you must understand is fundimentals are very important. These are the concepts and skills you will need to learn and understand as well as practice, in order to be sucessful and produce high quality models/animations. Fundimentals are also very different than the program you choose to create your works!

Many beginners ask to be taught how to model in a certain software, like "Can you teach me how to model a human in Maya, or Max?" What you are asking is two very different things. You are asking how to model...which involves learning techniques like, poly modeling, splines, nurbs, box modeling, etc... Within this there are new methods, edge loops, sculpting, low and high poly management, UV mapping, etc. Then you have to learn the program you bought or downloaded from open source.

The same can be said about animation, rigging, texturing...in fact each portion of the production pipeline has a set of fundimentals. Once you learn these basics, you can then select and learn a program that fits your needs. Try demos, before any purchase, and always remember there is no wrong set of tools. Most of them have the same basic functions, it is just personal preference and budget, that determine your choie of modeling/animation app.

Also, don't assume if you buy Maya or a super expensive set of tools, that it has an instant art button. The talented folks that create film and games have dedicated time and effort to get where they are. Use the manuals and tutorials to learn the functions of your software. Communities can help you with issues, and good books will concentrate on fundimentals.

Maybe I should have renamed this thread, because there has been a flood of "What is the best and easiest modeling program that will make pro models?" threads recently.

I've said something similar for years, mostly in those irritating threads. One day I realised that people on the whole are idiots, and perhaps the best way for them to realise they've just asked something stupid is to ignore them.

Cause telling them they're idiots out-right generally has them responding with.

"I know, but which is da bestest!"

Makes you really feel that the wisdom you've just departed sunk in real well.

When people ask what is the best program, they are totally lost. The forums will never get rid of that question.

If the forum was slightly bureaucratic, it could force the person to view all of sticky topics of a specific board before creating a new topic in it. I do not know about the viability of such feature.

But I think about my experiences in the company that I work for. A significant slice of the Information Technology that we use here is dedicated to the lack of orientation of the end user.

Let me share one of the depressing experiences I had:

I made an application to teach adequate and rapid typing to new computer users. A storm came when all of the students of one laboratory complained about the application.

Problem: "I type a special character in the exercise but it counts as a mistaken key press. Damn! I can not make the test because this stupid program is rotten. Fix this immediately."

*nightmare*

Solution: The keyboard was configured to English, and not to Portuguese - the language of our country. So á, à, ã, â, é, ê, í, ó, ô, õ, ú, ü, ç and some other symbols could not be inserted. >_<

I shall not hear that problem any more. And you can guess why.

Cheers.

Luiz Fernando.

lol, Raven, that is priceless.

5Louiz, I understand completely. At least you were able to learn from this. I get the feeling that many people believe there is this magic button in a certain program, that makes great models. It is like you say...some are lost on this.

You could. But you'd have to imagine the button and the finished product. And then there's the part where everyone else would have one of two reactions to your finished product: (A) Apathy, (B) Intolerance

Yay imagination

But in all seriousness(I know you were joking Heckno), anybody who thinks they can buy Maya, push a few buttons, and be a good 3D artist, isn't at a stage where they should be(and probably can't afford to) shelling out cash like that.
