A bump map is a greyscale image representing the heights of a surface where white is the highest and black is lowest. A normal map can be, and usually is, generated from a bump map by calculating the height differential. They can, however, be generated from a high poly model to be used on a low poly model to give the impression of extra detail. In a normal map red represents the x axis normal, green the y axis normal and blue the z axis normal. This then allows for more realistic lighting as this data tells a shader how the surface is affected by lighting. Check out the Ultimate Shader Pack thread in Work In Progress for some examples of bump maps, normal maps and shaders that use them. There are many free normal map generators out there and you can easily find one using google. If you really can't find one then let me know and I'll point you in the right direction or make you one.
