MSN Messenger - uggh!

Get Trillian instead - then you can be on MSN,AIM and ICQ all at once, plus you don't have to have update notices rammed down your throat and you can uninstall it if you don't like it

Trillian looks nicer as well.

MSN mesenger ? So you're at hotmail, eh ? ... even the emails can only recieve up to 2MB (when you're not connected)

XP came with windows messenger (just MSN messenger, without the MSN bit) - but thankfully I don't have a hotmail account

I had to go through quite a lengthy procedure to uninstall the bloody thing, and when you run it, there is no "Never remind me about bloated updates EVER AGAIN!" option

MSN Is the best. I like it more than trillian. MSN 6 BETA does have a few bugs but I like it.

You didn’t kick them, you just pushed them with your foot at a very high velocity!

yeah use Trillian and miss out on... Voice Chat, Video Conferrencing, Sharing Files, Remote Desktoping, Peer-to-Peer Services (&DxMultiplayer AutoConnections), some cool smilies, the ability to actually log on and NOT crash everything 2seconds because your passport isn't recognised, have people see you login and out when you actually DO, not suck up 15% of your bandwidth (even though it doens't need it) ... oh yeah and miss out on MsnPlus!

i'll admit the adverts are a bit annoying, but you can get moer blockers to stop them - as for uninstalling you can uninstall MSN 5.0 from the Add/Remove panel ... your can uninstall 4.x by editing your XP installation (it isn't a system essential program ya know lol)

and yeah the Hotmail account should cap off at 2mb, and if you don't download the excess and move to your HDD within a week they do just delete the older posts until the size is within the right amount. But you first get warnings and you can have anysized email in there (i've once had an entire Audio CD in ther before hehee) but you can only send out 1mb emails. But then no biggie to most eh.

Never had Trillian crash on me yet.

Personally I've never felt the need for the first two, but if you need them then yes, but Trillian can share files, contrary to what you said.

I used to think that. They tend to randomly pick ones to delete though - In order of size it seems. Normally I can download them before they get deleted though.

Umm... are we talking about the same version of Trillian here, I haven't had any bandwith problems or people view problems - maybe you haven't tried 0.74 yet?

Not with anyone cept other Trillian users... me & puffy know this first hand. I'd hardly call that great support, i can send from msn to trillian but i can't recieve from Trillian users.

0.74? the lasted version of trillian freebie is .75b and no i don't use the freebie version, i use Trillian 1.20 that is when i use it at all. I also dislike its inability to accept mIRC script, MSN can now with MsnPlus! hehee

Weird, I've shared files with MSN users before, and people on AIM. The lack of scripting ability is annoying indeed. On Linux there are open source programs which you can just add a feature to if it is missing.

Maybe its just me but in the past few weeks I've found myself dumping more and more MS software as it pisses me off, OfficeXP has gone in favour of OpenOffice (XP's Word pissed me off with rubbish image handling), Internet Explore has gone in favour of Mozilla, Windows Media Player has gone in favour of a small custom m-player, which admittedly uses the WMP ActiveX to play the media, but has its own interface. Most of my desk work (word, excel, net browsing) is now done on Knoppix or Mandrake setups. I ditched DX for my 3D engine project and am now using QT/OpenGL. Less powerful but much nicer to work with. My Windows box is now used for just DBP,Delphi and occassional game playing - but mostly I use the GC for that.

fair enough thats upto you... i don't think i'll ever give up my Mircosoft

Media Player Series9 has simply the best sound setup, especially on SoundBlaster SRS capable card - If you heard Evanessence in TrueSurround Dobly hehe you'll understand, but i have WinAmp3 for playing 3rd part files, like .mod's and such.
Nothing beats compatibility and setup of IE for NetExploring, i like MSNE but it just isn't quite the same as IE and is slower - not to mention when they changed the Messenger that it used, really turned me off it.
Email is done through Aol & IE
I prefer having all of the native Messengers, AOL8.0 for Aim - mIRC 6.3 w/NNS for mIRC - Yahoo!Pager 5.5 for yahoo! - LycosPaw for Lycos - MSN Messenger 5.0 w/MsnPlus!1 (dont like how 2 installs porn on your hdd)

Use DirectX9 as my primary 3D APi w/Visual Studio 6.0 - i prefer Microsofts way of programming, its nice and neat... not to mention consistant.

OfficeXP has been and always will be my office package of choice, i have SmartSuite and others ... Microsoft's are just so much simpler to use and get on with. As for Image Handling, i'm not sure what you mean but it has some of the best tools for text aorund images, resizing, editing, etc - especially if you have Photoshop installed.

I have RedHat/AmigaOS XL/WinXP Pro on here... they all support DirectX and i can switch between them all depending on what i want to do ... RedHat has better support for Softimage, Maya & Photoshop (they load AHELL of alot faster, photo in under a second ) ... AmigaOS w/PureBasic for just pissing around really ... WinXP for almost everything.

Have console but as i very rarely play games, i mostly just develop it would gather dust if it weren't for my roomie.

Are you sure? Certainly the Windows API is a complete mess, Linux "everything is a file" setup is much easier to cope with, and as for DX, maybe it is just me but I found the OpenGL way of working more intuitive.

Office XP is a nice app in terms of design, it is logical and simple. My gripe is that some aspects of it, such as image handling are terrible. The exception is Publisher, which IMO, is a fantastic application.

Obviously on RedHat that is via WineX, which is I believe, an OpenGL wrapper, meaning that Windows will be faster and better for all things DX.

Nope i don't have WineX, i got something else which support upto DirectX 8.1 fully but i don't remember what.

Perhaps you don't think Microsoft is a clean & neat way of programming but it is actuall extremely logical and fully laden with everything you could possibly want from a function.
You know with a Microsoft Lib & Include you won't get some half-assed function which needs an update later from another function, and everything is developed in an interlinked way - so that although you can't simply plugin 1 Library and hope to only have a single Include for it becuase it is all spread out makes it far easier to manage everything and keeps individual lengths of code down.

But its really more a matter of how each of us program that will no doubt endeer or not to a certain APi and Programming language.

you like Pascal & OpenGL ... i like VC++ w/DirectX - funnily enough this actually says alot more about us as programmers and our preferences than you'd think.

Indeed. Sadly the available Pascal compilers lack some of VC++'s features - but I chose it for the language. OpenGL is a similar story, its very well refined, but not enough graphics cards support OGL 2.0.
