Here we go again [img] [/img]

Ful DBPro Version Patch 4.1
Pentium Celeron 1.3Ghz

STALLING
Creata a 3d scene
Rotate the camera round a full 360 degrees. The first time you do this, the computer will stall at 45 degrees and again at 230.

CRAP FOG
Setup fog and look on the diagonals, the fog disappears.

MATRIX GRID LINES
Make a matrix
texture it with a bitmap that has been dividede in 2 (4 parts) the bitmap is 512*512 large. Try textureing the matrix with this bitmap. now pick a couple of tiles and texture it with the 2nd 3rd or 4th tiles. You get a lovely {sarcastic} set of matrix grid lines (usualy white).

Set bsp collision height adjustment
Create a game using bsp
try to implement that comand
your program will end. No error, No message, No Crash, No report, The program stops dead and ends.

I Could have sworn my game was smoother and faster before patch 4
Since i put patch 4 on. I have lost about 10 frames per second.
Take 2 computers both with DBPro on one with patch 3 and one with patch 4 look at the diference (patch 3 is better) - BSP Game

Now Lets have another Marvalous discusion about all these wonderfull wonderfull bugs that we really need and want and dont waste any time when it comes to making a game.

Yours p!$$£D offfully

Multiplayer works fine.
STALLING - Doesn't happen to me but try using FLUSH VIDEO MEMORY first
MATRIX GRID LINES - email Lee, use Kevil's matrix code instead
SET BSP COLLISION HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT - Doesn't happen to me
Speed difference - Depends on the game, some will go down, others will experience a dramatic speed boost.
BSP - Sucks in P3, lots of geometry errors and so on, fixed in P4.1

You CAN get rid of the matrix gridlines but losing a bit of quality in the textures (not so you would notice unless up close):

sorry no i dont.

These bugs are not about code so putting any code up would be pointless.

and you would need all the media to go with it.

My source code is fine

its just what db seems to do with it
e.g. Fog disapears on diaganols. thats db's fault.. not mine... hehe

I'd post up source code but you wont find much use for it.
It compiles corectly. Its just runtime problems. The game works. but efects are bad. Fog. Stalling. Matrix gridlines. lower frame rate. Its not my code. its just db

its not just my comp either.
i went round to a friends house and tried it.
same problems.

Thanks for the matrix solution. The graphics are now crap but at least ive got rid of those anoying lines [img][/img]

fog disappears on diagonals??
Do you mean on a matrix when you are looking diagonally across the tiles? That can happen because of the way fog is calculated from the matrix vertices not absolute distance. If you have a fog distance which is short in relation to the matrix tile size,it becomes very noticeable. The fog vanishes away as you approach 45 degrees to the tile alignment.

Only cure -make tile size smaller or fog distance larger.
sorry if you meant something else.

I know how to fix up the matrix 'bug'. Just put in update matrix after you put a texture on it.

It was me that gave you the multiplayer example I think - it works great on each of my machines. Are you running a firewall that is blocking the connection?

There are no known bugs with multiplayer - just look on the RGT forums (in the bugs and the multiplayer forums).

yeah, have met fog problem but it IS insoluble except by what i said longer fog distance or relatively smaller matrix grid.
The fog is calculated from the vertex that's why,- not from the .. mmm,. circular distance from the camera.

The lighting on 3d objects is the same thats why they appear smooth rather than flat planes.
I once looked through the direct X sdk (in part) trying to understand this and it MAY - if i remmber correctly -be possible to do different sort of shading related to surface plane. And it MAY be possible to do different fog, depending on your video card.
There is volumetric fog or fog tables but EXACTLY what that means ???

Just wondering .. what would happen if you had a smaller matrix just in the local camera area which moved with it ???
mmm. curious curious ..
cheers

'CRAP FOG
Setup fog and look on the diagonals, the fog disappears.'

This is like that in almost all 3d applications and games. It's the way the fogging object is handled. If it's near enough for you to notice it, it's you or your machines fault that it look like 'crap'.

Ooopsie, looks like we're down to one problem now, aren't we?

Why you can say that i am not calm is every wierd as i have no [img] [/img] in my posts.

I took a break from dbpro to wait for a few bugs to clear. I want to write a game now and i cant write 5 lines without getting a stupid bug like the matrix grid lines which despite having a temporary solution of turing the filter on...looses quality... but its better than nothing. Most of these bugs arnt fixed theyve just had a tempory work around. But its got to the stage where so many wrk arounds makes my game crap and i didn buy dbpro to write crap graphics and laggy games. i bought drk basic PROFESSIONAL to write close to proffesional games. I appreciate that its not perect and its got a few bugs but i asked for a few of these things to be fixed ages ago and after 4 patches..nothing has changed and it seems the only real way to report a bug is to email lee... i keep this post up to find out what gonna happen to these bugs that we can fix i.e. the fog and bsp collisiton height adjustment. Really im waiting for a dbpro bug patch guy to notice that the problem exists I assure you if dbdn was free i would be there listing bugs 24/7 anyway...ive wasted another 30 minutes writting a post that im sure will have pointy remarks thown at it so here we go...do your worst

DB Pro is a relatively new release. That it has bugs, isn't too
surprising. (You can also add the "INPUT" command bug, and "ZROTATE" bug to your list.)
Patience is a good thing.
If the developers give equal time to fixing known bugs, as they do to creating new features, then I will be happy. I think that's all
you can ask for.....
The only thing worse than fixing a bug, is fixing one bug that creates two more bugs. And then something that was working, suddenly stops working. As complex as an engine is, it takes time to
test and make sure that if you touched something in one place, that something somewhere else didn't also get jiggled.
I'd rather they took the time, and did it right.
I'll hang in there as long as reported bugs are being fixed.

If a "bug" is not put into code form and submitted directly to us, it will not (usually) get fixed, especially if it's rather obscure and especially if it's a subjective "it looks crap" type of bug, i.e. it's not actually a parser/compiler bug at all (which are far higher on the priority list). If you want to see something resolved for Upgrade 5 due out July/August then report it to me (or Lee), simply posting here is not enough - there are brand new messages posted to this forum every single minute of the day, we do not read them all, we never will be able to.

Cheers,

Rich

" I can wait as long as it takes, so long as everything works and has been fully tested."

Sorry folks, I can gurantee that P5 will still have lots of bugs. It isn't fixing the bugs that is the problem, but rather the attitude of certain DBS staff towards bugs.

I agree with Rob K that there will still be loads of bugs in P5 and probably P6. What will be annoying is the bugs that will be left are the ones that have been mentioned a thousand times. Unfortunately those in charge of fixing them don't see them as a priority and would rather give us new stuff to make DBPro more flashier and easier to sell. A cynical view I know but probably true. I may be wrong and by patch 6 we have a bug-free language and everyone's happy.

It must be surely in DB's interest to get the language to a stage that it is nearly perfect and then do like everyone else and charge a fee for a major patch. Until things are working perfectly they would be a bit cheeky to charge for patches.

Frobscottle do you know how difficult it is to fix up errors in the compiler (especially one that makes 3d games)? If you find a bug in DBP, do the sensible thing and do what rich suggested instead of ranting on to people and trying to make flame bait.

Just appreciate what you have if you dont want to email rich. Workaround the bugs, thats part of programming. You identify the problem, think of a way to fix it, then fix it.
