Given that water is a cool new effect in X10. What are the chances
that someone will actually make a game without it?

I'm really hoping that this opens the door of creativity rather than
providing a new effect that everyone will use until it's tired.

Well, I'm not going to use/need the water that much, mostly going to use it as a background stuff and as a natural blockages.

I'm going to need to do dozens of custom segment pieces for my natural outdoor scenes. I hope TGC or someone else soon comes up a way to do bumps and hills in the editor.

I can see the water opening up a whole new world that would be hard to get tired.

This is not just something to hide secret rooms amd passages, although that is a great use for it.

I imagine there will be sharks, giant octopus, squids, manta rays, and alot of other interesting enemies/obstacles on the way.

I think that has already been done...

Check out the small island thread for an example.

Would be great to just grab a point on the floor grid in the editor and use pgup pgdwn to pull points up to make hills.

That was done with custom segments, the only currently possible way.

It's not a big problem, since I have decent modelling and texturing skills, but it'll mean more work than what it would if the editor itself would have the mentioned editing possibilities.

Would it be possible to make an underwater city with this for a more realistic water effect... But, in the areas under the water it doesn't come in to it?

No, FPSC X10 currently only has one vast area of water that you can adjust the height of. Try and think of the water as one large flat plane the reflects objects near it. The water can't actually interact with slopes or fall or anything like that.

Is the water set per segment or for a whole level?

Sorry, but I didn't understand that. The water is a plane that is probably the whole grid big, and the user can adjust if it is active, and if so, the height of the water, and the color effects.

Like Black Terror said, the water covers the whole grid area and beyond.

Some time ago there was this discussion where Lee was planning to allow a placing of separated water-areas, so that you could have "pools" with different effects and heights in different areas of the map.

Pools would be really nice, and I don't see why they can't make segments of water too.

So you have to be careful. If you want the illusion of water in a room, you can't have windows. Otherwise they'd see it everywhere else as well?

Ew.

You think too far ahead.
